Scott City girls blow past Southwestern Heights
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Even though Scott City came in as the top seed in the Cimarron sub-state, they knew they couldn’t overlook anyone, including their opponent on Tuesday night in Southwestern Heights. Yes, the Lady Beavers beat them by 39 points three weeks ago, but Thursday’s overtime loss at Goodland was a lesson in not taking care of what was in front of you.
It would take about four minutes to get a big run going, but Scott City would use a big run in the first and second quarters to advance to Friday’s semi-final round with a 67-36 win over the Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Beavers never trailed, but were tied twice in the game, at seven and nine. After the game was tied at nine with 3:44 left in the first quarter, Scott City went on a big run and never looked back. Over the next seven minutes, a 28-2 run to open up a 37-11 lead with 4:52 left in the first quarter. Southwestern Heights never made a big run for the rest of the game, as the Lady Beavers led 46-20 at the break.
Scott City (18-3) would get it to a 49-20 lead early third quarter, before the Lady Mustangs would cut the deficit to 51-26 at the midway point of the third frame. The Lady Beavers pushed the lead back up to 27 going into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Southwestern Heights (2-19) got it to 61-36 with 6:11 left, but they would not score the rest of the night. Scott City scored the games final six points, and forced a continuous clock with 4:31 remaining, and coasted to the 67-36 win.
Four Lady Beavers finished in double figures, led by Amber Latta with a career-high 19 points, while Brynn McCormick had 15, Emily Weathers 14 and Lyndi Rumford finished with 11 points. Scott City went 22-32 at the free throw line and had 15 turnovers. Shelby Sutherland led Southwestern Heights with 13 points, as they finished 13-22 from the foul line and had 12 turnovers. Scott City had the rebounding edge 32-30.
With the win, the Lady Beavers have won the last six games in the series, and improved their record to 7-1 against the Lady Mustangs. Scott City’s 67 and Southwestern Heights’ 36 points were the most scored by both teams in the series history. The Lady Beavers have now won four consecutive sub-state quarterfinal games dating back to 2016, which is the longest in program history. Southwestern Heights has lost nine straight sub-state games, dating back to 2012, and have lost eight consecutive sub-state quarterfinal games.

Scott City advances to Friday’s semi-final round of sub-state, where they will face Cimarron in Cimarron. The Lady Bluejays held off Lakin 55-47 on Tuesday. The other side of the bracket saw big upsets, as Holcomb went in to Colby and upset the Lady Eagles 43-34, and the Goodland Cowgirls upset the Hugoton Lady Eagles in Hugoton 29-27.
