Scott City girls blow out Southwestern Heights

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew they were the heavy favorite heading into Monday’s sub-state opener at home against Southwestern Heights. What they didn’t want to do was overlook the Lady Mustangs. And that they didn’t. The Lady Beavers held Southwestern Heights without a field goal for the first 16:31 of the game, and took a 59-24 win to advance to Thursday’s sub-state semi-final at Southwestern Heights High School.

Much like the first meeting, Scott City (15-6) got off to a big start. It was 20-1 after the first quarter, and 36-1 at the break. The Lady Beavers would score 32 straight points after the Lady Mustangs scored their lone point of the first half.

Scott City’s run would go to 35 straight, as Southwestern Heights (2-19) went 16:31 without a field goal to start the game. The Lady Beavers would lead by as many as 43 at 47-4 with 4:32 left in the third quarter. After that the Lady Mustangs went on a 14-0 run over three minutes and trailed 49-18 after three quarters. A running clock was used in the fourth quarter, as Scott City went on a 10-6 fourth quarter run.

Leading the way for Scott City was Lyndi Rumford with 21 points and Emily Weathers added 18. The Lady Beavers were 10-18 at the line and committed nine turnovers. Susana Carrillo led Southwestern Heights with 11 points, as they finished with 17 turnovers. They were only 1-2 from the line.  Scott City won the rebounding battle 41-26.

With the win, Scott City leads the all-time series 5-1, and have won four straight. It was Scott City’s third straight sub-state quarterfinal win, as they have now won 15 games in a season for the second straight year. Southwestern Heights has dropped 19 straight to end the season, and have lost seven consecutive sub-state quarterfinal games.

Scott City will play Larned Thursday night at Southwestern Heights High School. The Lady Indians knocked off Hugoton 45-32. Colby defeated Goodland 53-30 to advance to the other sub-state semi-final game on Thursday, and will meet up with Cimarron, who rallied for a 50-44 win over Holcomb.
