Scott City Football sees progress in summer camp

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–There are only seven Fridays left before the season opener for the Scott City football team. Tuesday, the Beavers wrapped up their annual summer camp that was pushed back a couple days due to harvest. Overall, preliminary numbers out for football show an increase of players in the 50’s, inflated by a bigger freshman class. 

This year’s camp also saw a new director for the first time in a decade. Longtime assistant Jim Turner took the reigns of the program in February, making it his first head coaching job. Don’t expect things to drastically change though, as the offensive and defensive schemes look to remain the same. There are two new coaches on staff, both with ties to the program recently. Alex Hutchins moves from seventh grade, and played from 2006-09 in the program, and Michael McEachern, who played on the gridiron for Scott City from 2009-12. 

Turner has cited a positive summer in the weight room, and feels like there were gains from his players this year. The summer weightlifting isn’t finished, however. They will continue through the end of the month. 

The first day of practice with two-a-days will be Monday, August 15, with the first game of the season on Friday, September 2, as Hays will come to Darner Field. It will be the first time since 2003 that the Beavers & Indians have met on the gridiron.
