Scott City football returns to the road to face Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Whenever Scott City and Cimarron have done battle over the past six games, it has been a blowout victory by the Beavers. Tonight’s 7 pm kickoff at Cimarron could very well be much closer than in years past.

Scott City started off the first 12:12 flat last Friday night in their home opener against rival Holcomb, but rallied from a 14-0 hole to knock off the Longhorns 23-14 in a penalty fest at Darner Field. After the Beavers trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter, the team woke up and scored on three straight possessions in the second quarter to take a 17-14 halftime lead. The final score came with 3:36 remaining on a Wyatt Hayes two-yard plunge. Scott City’s defense limited Holcomb to just 162 yards of offense and only three non-penalty first downs in the second half. The Beavers rushed for 195 yards with a balanced attack by their backfield of Wyatt Hayes, Jarret Jurgens and Nick Nowak. Scott City has held their opponents to under 200 yards off offense in each of the first two games, while averaging 286, and have defeated their opponents by a score of 26-11. The Beavers also improved to 34-2 in GWAC play.

Cimarron bounced back from a tough road loss at Holcomb in week one by routing Stanton County 70-0 in their home opener last Friday night. The Bluejays scored 30 first quarter points and eventually led 62-0 at the break. Cimarron is under a new coach in Greg Koenig, and brought his rushing-heavy offense with him from Beloit to Cimarron. They rushed for 484 yards and finished with 541 yards of offense in the victory. Josh Seabolt leads the ground attack, as he has already rushed for 407 yards and five touchdowns through two games, as the Bluejays average around 375 yards on the ground. Cimarron averages 41 points, while allowing eight per game through the first two games. They are coming off a 7-3 record in 2016, and are on their fourth coach in four years. While at 1-1 on the year, the Bluejays have shown signs of significant improvement from years past.

Scott City leads the all-time series 13-5, and has won the last six meetings since 2010. Last year, the Beavers won 52-7 at Darner Field, that gave Scott City coach Jim Turner his first win as coach of the Beavers.
