Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–A new schedule, new era and a new classification are just a few of the new things the Scott City Beavers will be seeing in 2016. Monday saw longtime assistant, now head coach Jim Turner conduct the first of three two-a-day practice for the Beavers. Turner, who has been in Scott City for 22 seasons including this year, replaces Glenn O’Neil, who took over as the Seaman head coaching position in January, and spent nine years as the Scott City head coach, and 20 years in the program.

Over 50 kids are out for football this year, which is slightly higher than the last few years. While there are some holes to fill, there is a pretty good skill set returning from a 10-1 campaign in 2015. Bo Hess returns as the signal caller, while fellow seniors Justin Faurot, Kyle Cure and junior Jarret Jurgens return at the skill sets. Only two lineman on offense are coming back in seniors Eddie Tilton and Mikennon Donovan.

Defensively, the Beavers lost their top tackler from last year, but do return seven starters, led by seniors Cure, Faurot, Jaime De La Rocha, Garrett Osborn, and junior Nick Nowak.

As for a new classification and schedule, Scott City is bumping up to 4A, Division II. The Beavers have been in Class 3A the past 10 season, ans with that came a schedule bump. Of course they will play all GWAC teams, but have added Hays, Wellington and Concordia to their schedule, and Cimarron stays on after being a district opponent. Out of the nine teams on the schedule, six made the playoffs, two made it past one round and one was a state champion (Holcomb 4A, DII).
