Scott City earns a doubleheader sweep over KC Christian
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In night two of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic at Scott Community High School Friday night, two teams who have never faced off matched up, as Scott City played host to the Kansas City Christian Panthers. For the Beavers, it would end up being a good night, as they were able to sweep the Panthers, with the girls winning 41-39 in thrilling fashion and the boys pulling away in the second half for a 69-45 win.
Despite both teams starting slow, they ended up with a thrilling finish. Kansas City Christian would lead 8-5 after the first quarter. In the first half, Scott City would only have leads of 3-2 in the first period and 13-12 in the second quarter. The Lady Panthers led 17-14 at break, and would heat up in the third quarter. KC Christian (0-3) built up the only double digit lead by either side at 26-16 with five minutes left in the third quarter. The way the pace of the game was going, it seemed as though that would be a tall task for the Lady Beavers to overcome. Shots finally started dropping for Scott City (1-1). They would slowly chip in to the Lady Panther lead, and cut it to 30-22 after three periods. In the final frame, the Lady Beavers started out scoring five straight, then four straight, and eventually took their first lead of the second half at 36-35 with 1:54 left on a Bailey Latta basket. Kansas City Christian countered with a three-point basket by Alexis Termini nearly 20 seconds later to retake the lead at 38-36. A Mariah Campbell basket tied the game at 38 with 1:14 left. After a Lady Panther turnover, Scott City got the go-ahead basket from Kiana Yager, on a three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining to give the Lady Beavers a 41-38 lead. KC Christian hit one of two free throws with 14 seconds left, and Scott City was able to force a late turnover to secure their first win of the young season. The Lady Beavers were led by Bailey Latta with 12 points, while Callie Eldred had 12 and Alexis Termini added 11 points for Kansas City Christian.

The final game of the evening would be played close for about two and a half quarters. Six lead changes and three ties occurred in the first half. Scott City would score eight straight in the first quarter to break a seven-all tie, to propel them to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter. Kansas City Christian (0-3) scored the first six points of the second period over a four-plus minute span to claim an 18-17 lead, and a 20-19 lead with 2:41 left before halftime. The Beavers turned the ball over five times early in the period, and were held scoreless for the first 4:56 of the second quarter. After trailing 20-19, Scott City (2-0) closed out the first half with seven straight to lead 26-20 at intermission. Kansas City Christian would come no closer than three points in the third quarter, as the Beavers used a 14-0 run in a four minute, 35 second stretch of the third and fourth quarters to open the game up to a 50-31 score with 6:20 left. With the game all but put away, the Beavers opened up their lead to as big as 25, and ended up winning by 24 at 69-45. Scott City would only have one double figure scorer in the game. Trey O’Neil finished up with a game-high 28 points. O’Neil scored his 1,000th point in the third quarter, and now has 1,012 points for his career. Chantz Yager and Sloan Baker each had nine points for the Beavers. Leading the charge for Kansas City Christian was Mitchell Paul with 22 points and Luke Streeter had 11.

Scott City will face Pueblo East at Garden City High School Saturday afternoon to wrap up the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic. The Eagles split with Holcomb on Friday, as the girls defeated the Lady Longhorns 61-52 to improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Pueblo East boys fell to Holcomb 70-37 to drop to 3-3 on the year. This will be the fourth game in five days for Pueblo East.
