Scott City drops two home games to Hays

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night began the final stretch of the regular season, as Scott City played host to the Hays High Indians at the Scott Community Event Center. It would be a night that the visitors from Hays would pick up a couple of road wins, as the Lady Indians got a 38-33 win, while the Indian boys pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 57-35 victory.

Hays would never trail in the game, despite being tied twice in the fourth quarter. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and led 9-4 after the first eight minutes. Scott City pulled to within 10-8 early in the second frame, before Hays went on an 11-5 run to lead 21-13 with 2:44 left in the first half. The Lady Beavers would score the final points of the half and trailed 21-17 at the break. Hays scored the first seven points of the second half to give themselves their largest lead of the game at 28-17 with 2:46 left in the third quarter. Scott City responded with the final four points of the quarter, and then a basket in the fourth period to get to within 28-21 with 6:34 left. The Lady Indians led 31-23 with 5:29 remaining, before the Lady Beavers would come back and tie the game at 31 with 1:41 left. Both teams would trade two points to tie the game at 33 with a minute left. A Carly Lang layup with 47 seconds left would put Hays up 35-33, as they forced a turnover on the next Scott City possession, and closed the game out with three free throws to pick up the 38-33 win.

Carly Lang had 12 of her game-high 13 points in the second half to lead Hays, and Jersey Johnson added 11 points for the Lady Indians. They had 15 turnovers and went 9-19 at the line. Erika Felker had nine points to lead Scott City, while Amber Latta added eight, as the Lady Beavers had 13 turnovers and went 7-8 at the foul line.

Hays now leads the series over Scott City 2-1. The Lady Beavers faced three teams from the WAC for the first time since the 1986-87 season, and went 0-3 this year.

Scott City couldn’t have started out any better than they did, as they looked to pull off the upset. The Beavers trailed early 2-0, before hitting their first five shots, going on a 13-1 run to lead the No. 1 team in Class 5A 13-3 midway through the first quarter. However, Hays would settle down and score the final 10 points of the period to tie the game at 13 after the first quarter. The Beavers would take a 16-13 lead early in the second quarter, before the Indians would go on a 14-2 run to take a 27-18 lead at the break. They slowly increased their lead to 12 after the third quarter at 37-25. A 20-10 Hays run in the fourth quarter saw them pull away, as they scored the games final eight points in a 57-35 win.

Hays had three players in double figures, led by Jace Linenberger’s 20 points, while TJ Nunnery had 13 and Dalyn Swartz added 10. The Indians had 10 turnovers and finished 9-13 from the line. Scott City was led by Josh Rosin’s career-high 23 points, as he hit seven three’s in the game. The Beavers committed 15 turnovers and was only 1-2 at the free throw line.

Hays has won two straight in the series, as Scott City leads the series 5-3. The Beavers have now dropped five straight games to teams from the Western Athletic Conference. Hays has won 23 straight games dating back to last season.
