Scott City drops two close games in Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming out of midseason tournaments, Scott City and Goodland would resume GWAC play on Tuesday night inside the Max Jones Fieldhouse in Goodland. In a pair of games, where neither side would lead by more than nine points, the Cowboys and Cowgirls would earn a sweep, as the Lady Beavers fell 37-33, while the Cowboys would rally in the fourth quarter to win 52-49.

Goodland Girls 37, Scott City 33
The Cowgirls never trailed and were never tied with Scott City, as they would hold the Lady Beavers at arms length throughout. Goodland (10-4, 6-2 GWAC) would jump out to a four point lead at the end of the first quarter at 12-8, and extend their lead to 16-8 with 6:17 left before halftime. Scott City (7-6, 2-4) closed out the final six minutes of the first half with a 9-2 run to pull to within 18-17 at the break. The Lady Beavers had several chances to not only tie the game, but lead, and were unsuccessful each time. In the third period, the Cowgirls would go on a 9-3 run to lead 27-20 with 4:30 left in the period. Scott City responded with an 8-2 run of their own to get to within 29-28 with 2:15 left in the third stanza. That would be the closest the Lady Beavers got the rest of the way as they trailed 32-30 entering the fourth quarter. The Cowgirls would lead by six halfway throught the final period, but Scott City couldn’t get any closer than three. Scott City would have a chance to tie, but couldn’t convert on the shot. Goodland hit one of two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to make the final 37-33.

Goodland was led by Marie Martin’s 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Hope Biermann added 10 points. The Cowgirls went 15-27 from the free throw line and had 18 turnovers. Scott City had all nine players that checked in score, and were led by Avery Lewis with eight points. They had 22 turnovers and were 10-16 from the free throw line.

With the win, Goodland has now won 10 straight in the series, as they now lead the series 43-30 since 1981. Scott City saw a three-game win streak end and scored their season-low in points.

It was a battle of two teams ranked in the Top 10 of Class 3A that saw 12 lead changes and three ties. The No. 2 ranked team would hold off the Beavers in the final quarter, as the No. 10 ranked team led for most of the night. After it was tied at five early on, Scott City went on a 10-3 run over the final half of the opening period to lead 15-8 after the first quater. The Beavers led 17-8 earlly in the second quarter when Goodland (12-2, 7-1 GWAC) scored nine straight to tie the game at 17 with 4:36 left before intermission. After the Cowboys took a 20-19 lead, Scott City responded with four straight to lead 23-20 at the break. The Beavers would lead 32-25 with 5:25 left in the third quarter, when the tide would turn in favor of Goodland. To begin their 10-2 run, a lob intended to go inside would go in the hoop for a three pointer, as the Cowboys had that spark their run, as they led 35-34 with 2:01 left in the third quarter. Scott City (10-3, 4-3) took a one-point lead in to the final frame at 38-37. Goodland would score the first sevenn points of the fourth quarter to lead 44-37 with 5:40 left. The Beavers would get back to tie the game at 44 iwth 4:48 left. Trailinng 48-45 with 2:58 left, Scott City scored four straight and led 49-48 with 49 seconds left. However, the Cowboys came back and got the go ahead basket with 30 seconds remaining at 50-49. They would sink a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to lead 52-49. Scott City had one final chance, as a game-tying three would rim out, and the Cowboys prevailed 52-49.

Braylon Mull would pour in a career-high 18 points for Goodland, while Brady Brumbaugh added 17 points. The Cowboys were 6-7 at the free throw line and committed 13 turnovers. Scott City was led by Avery Radke’s career-high 15 points, while Jackson Rumford added 14. The Beavers went just 2-6 from the foul line and had 12 turnovers, with only one coming in the first half.

Goodland has now won two straight, sweeping the season series for the second time in three years. The Beavers lead the all-time series since 1979 41-34.

Scott City will have two straight home games, beginning with Hugoton on Friday, while Goodland has a week off before traveling to Burlington next Tuesday.
