Kismet, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a game that saw 28 fouls in the first half, the Scott City Beavers were able to eventually separate themselves from a pesky Southwestern Heights Mustang squad, and advance to the Sub-State Finals with a 79-50 win at Southwestern Heights High School. The Beavers led from start to finish, and picked up win number 21 on the season.

Scott City was able to get off to a good start, building up a lead as big as 14 points in the first quarter, but a 6-0 Mustang run in the final minute gave the Beavers a 21-13 lead after the opening period. The second quarter saw a 30-point performance from the Beavers, as Southwestern Heights kept fouling, sending Scott City to the foul line 25 times in the half. After the Mustangs cut the deficit to 29-24, a 21-7 run in the final five minutes gave the Beavers a 51-31 lead. Scott City would push it to 71-41 heading into the final period, forcing a running clock, and would put it on cruise control to advance to the sub-state final. Drew Kite led all scorers for the Beavers (21-1) with 20 points. He had 16 second quarter points. Joey Meyer added 16 and Tyler Hess chipped in 10 for a second straight game. The Longhorns led a majority of the way, but the Cardinals couldn’t get any closer than three points in the second half. Cheney ended their season at 14-8.
