Scott City dominates Concordia
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday night’s game between Scott City and Concordia was the shortest turnaround against an opponent for Scott City in 48 years, when they faced Ness City twice in three weeks. While both of those games against the Eagles in the early 70’s were losses, the Beavers would looking to duplicate what they were able to do against Concordia two weeks ago. Scott City may have been more dominate the second time around against the Panthers, shutting them out 28-0 in the Regional round of the Class 3A playoffs at Darner Field.
Scott City would fumble on their opening drive at the Panther 19, despite running 12 plays and nearly five minutes on the clock. Their defense would be stellar, forcing a three and out. The Beavers would go nine plays, 50 yards in just over five minutes for their first score of the night. A third consecutive third down conversion saw Parker Gooden connect with Hunter Yager on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 41.3 seconds left in the first quarter to go up 6-0. The extra point was no good.
In the second quarter, Scott City added another score, going 66 yards in five plays, taking just under three minutes off the clock. Hunter Yager ran it in from three yards out, and Parker Gooden ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 with 3:29 left before hafltime.
While there was no scoring in the third quarter, Scott City was able to move the ball. Their first drive went six plays before a turnover on downs, and then a 10-play drive was halted at the Panther 8 yard line by a fumble. Concordia would pick up their first, first down of the game with 1:36 left in the third quarter on a 10-yard run.
The Panthers attempted a fourth down on the first play of the fourth quarter, and would be stopped at their own 26 yard line. Scott City was able to score two times in the final period. Their first came on a Cale Goodman one-yard dive with 9:10 left to go up 21-0 with the Alexis Reyes PAT. Following a turnover on downs by Concordia at their own 26 yard line, the Beavers got a 22-yard touchdown run by Parker Gooden on fourth and seven with 5:34 left to go up 28-0 with the Reyes PAT. The Panthers picked up two first downs on their next series, one on a penalty, and would turn the ball over on downs with 4:13 left. Scott City would miss a 48-yard field goal, and Concordia would be picked off late in the game, and the Beavers would come out with their second shutout of the Panthers on the season.
Parker Gooden was 6-11 passing for 113 yards with a touchdown pass. Jackson Lewis had a 46 yard reception, while Hunter Yager had two catches for 30 yards. Yager added 67 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown, Cale Goodman added 61 yards on 10 carries and a score, and Gooden finished with 55 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Scott City finished with 353 yards of offense, with 240 coming on the ground and 113 through the air. They finished with 18 first downs and were 7-11 on third downs.
Wyatt Trost finished 3-9 passing for 14 yards with an interception. Dylan Thoman had a 10-yard catch. Keyan Miller led the Panthers on the ground with 27 yards on nine carries. Hunter Schroeder had one carry for two yards, and left in the first quarter with an injury. Concordia had only 22 yards rushing and 36 yards of offense, with only three first downs. They finished 0-9 on third down.
With the win, Scott City improves to 5-0 all-time against Concordia, and are now 14-1 all-time against teams from the NCKL. Also in the win, the Beavers improved to 52-10 in the playoffs, 18-4 in the Regional round and are 28-10 at home.
Scott City are 8-2, and will host the Cheney Cardinals in the Sectional round of the Class 3A Playoffs next week. The Cardinals are also 8-2, after they knocked off Wichita Collegiate for a second time this year in a 30-13 win on Friday. This will be the first time that the teams will face each other, and it’s the first time that Scott City will take on a team from the Central Plains league, when they won at Conway Springs.
