Scott City cross country teams repeat as GWAC Champions

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In perhaps one of the cooler days of running this year, the Great West Activities Conference schools made their way to Goodland Thursday afternoon to compete in the GWAC cross country meet, held at Sugar Hills Golf Club.

Scott City would sweep the both the boys and girls titles for a second straight season. It would the the third straight year the Lady Beavers clamed the top spot on the girls side.

Starting off with the girls side, Scott City finished with 30 points, and edge Cimarron who had 35, while Holcomb came in third. Scott City and Cimarron are ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A. Colby would take the top three places, led by senior Lara Murdock with a time of 18:51.0.  The Lady Eagles had only four runners, as a team has to have a minimum of five runners. Courtney Clinesmith from Cimarron would place fourth, Ulysses’ Yessenia Ornelas was fifth and in sixth was Scott City’s Emma Wheeler. 

For the boys, Scott City won the meet with 33 points, Holcomb came in second with 58 points, and Cimarron was third with 64 points. Roberto Apodaca was the league champion for Scott City, as he ran in a time of 16:23.7, while Daegan VanPelt from Holcomb was second in a time of 16:45.1 and Holcomb’s Braxton Sizemore was third. Cimarron’s Damian Stantisteven was fourth and Jaxson Kough from Scott City was fifth.

Up next for the teams will be regionals on Saturday, October 24. Ulysses will head to the Class 4A Regional at Buhler, Colby & Goodland head to the Class 3A Regional at Norton, and Cimarron, Holcomb and Scott City will be at the Class 3A Lakin Regional.
