Scott City cross country sweeps top spots, volleyball drops two matches at Ulysses
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday marked the beginning of the second half push for both the cross country and volleyball teams, as they hit the road in hopes of improving on what they have built. For the cross country teams, they took the top spots in the team standings at the Ness City Invitational, while the volleyball team dropped a couple of tough matches in Ulysses.
Starting off with the cross country results at Ness City, it was another big performance for the teams, as the girls won their fourth meet in five attempts this year. The Lady Beavers finished with 29 points, while Trego Community was second with 53. Makaela Stevens finished in second place with a time of 21:14, followed by teammates Megan Vance placing seventh (21:54), Olivia Prieto in eighth (21:57) and Trella Davis in ninth (22:05), Kodi Rogers finishing in 14th place (23:10) and Aly Tarango coming in 21st (25:26). The boys won their second meet of the year, as they finished with 22 points, 39 better than runner-up Trego Community. Scott City took the top two individual spots, as Jack Thomas won his fifth race of the year with a time of 16:21, followed by Conner LeBeau with a time of 17:37. Rounding out the lineup were Austin Rios in fifth (18:27), Roberto Apodaca seventh (18:29), Theron Tucker in 12th (18:50), Angel Rodriguez in 18th (20:00), and Eric Frances finishing in 19th place (20:05). Up next for the cross country team is the Lakin Invitational on Saturday, October 7.
Things were a little rougher for the volleyball team, as they saw their six-match winning streak come to a halt. It was Scott City’s first GWAC triangular of the year in Ulysses. Scott City started off pushing the No. 10 team in Class 4A, DI Ulysses, to three sets, dropping the first set 25-16, winning the second set 25-21, and lost the third set 25-10. Emily Smith led the attacking with nine kills, while Emily Weathers added seven kills, and Jalynn Habiger finished with 24 assists. Following a long wait, Hugoton would suprise the Lady Beavers with a 25-23, 25-16 sweep. Scott City’s offense was down in their second match of the day, as they only produced 15 kills. Emily Smith had five kills, while Jalynn Habiger added three. Scott City dropped 8-3 on the year, and will continue with their busy schedule. Saturday will see them play at the Oakley Invitational, Tuesday at the Holcomb triangular, the GWAC quadrangular on Thursday, and the Scott City Invitational on Saturday, October 7.
