Scott City Cross Country sweeps Ness City; Girls Tennis with a tough day in Ellsworth

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Coming off a good performance at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday in Lawrence, the Scott City boys and girls cross country teams swept the team races on Thursday at the Ness City Invitational, their third sweep of the season. Thursday was a tough day for the Lady Beavers, playing in their third meet in four days. Scott City finished fifth at the Ellsworth Invitational while facing what probably was their stiffest competition of the season.

At Ness City, the Lady Beavers had no problems with claiming the team title, scoring 16 points, while Ellis was second with 47. Makaela Stevens paced Scott City with a third place finish with a time of 21:17. Trella Davis finished in seventh with a time of 22:24.84, with teammates Dulce Ayala in ninth with a time of 22:37, and Olivia Prieto right behind in 10th with a finish of 22:43. Other finishers included Kylee Trout 18th, Paige Winderlin 19th and Paige Winderlin 21st. 

For the boys, they were dominant, placing five boys in the top 10, and winning the meet with 19 points, with Natoma in a distant second with 60. Individually, Jess Drohman finished second with a time of 17:59, Dylan Hutchins third at 18:02, Conner LeBeau fifth with a time of 18:42.37, Irvin Lozano coming in sixth at 18:49, and Drew Duff placing 10th with a time of 19:03.09. Seth Cardenas finished in 21st and Austin Rios came in 24th. 

The Cross Country team will run at Lakin next Saturday, October 10.

As for the girls tennis team, it was tough go of it in Ellsworth. They finished fifth in the meet, but had one first place finish. That came from No. 1 Singles player Emma Price, who went 3-1 on the day. The No. 2 Doubles team of Christina and Melanie Tilton came in fourth place, while the No. 2 Singles player Ximena Ayala and the No. 1 Doubles team of Krystal Appel and Alma Martinez finished in fifth place on the day. Salina South won the meet with 31 points. 

Up next for the girls tennis team will be their final regular season tournament Saturday in Dodge City, before regionals next Friday and Saturday.
