Scott City cross country sweeps Goodland Invitational, tennis 2nd at Hays

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The season got started off on a good note for the Scott City cross country team on Thursday at Sugar Hills Golf Course in Goodland, as both the boys and girls teams swept the top spots at the Goodland Invitational. It was also a good day for the girls tennis team at Hays, as they took a second place finish.

Cross County
The defending state champs won the girls side with 25 points, 14 points ahead of Oakley in second. Junior Megan Vance took the top spot in the meet with a time of 18:56, followed by Clare Hawkins right behind in second at 18:57. Piper Wasinger was fourth (19:30), Kairae Berry finished 11th (21:16), Samatha Aguilar 15th (22:32), Claire Rumford was 19th (23:13), and Alivia Noll came in 26th (24.20). On the boys side, team won the meet with 50 points, followed by Holcomb with 71. Eric Frances took the top spot with a time 15:15, while Jaxson Kough placed fourth with a time of 15:44. Two other runners finished in the top 10, with Roberto Apodaca coming in seventh (15:58) and Anthony Wolfe in eighth (16:14). Freddy Castill finished 30th (17:28), Henry Aguilar was 33rd (18:01) and in 34th was Josh Kasselman (18:15). The course was a 4,000 meter course. Up next is the Greeley County Invitational on Saturday, September 14 in Tribune.

Girls Tennis
Competing in their first meet in nearly two weeks, the Lady Beaver tennis team finished second at the Hays Invitational on Thursday. Abbie LeBeau finished second at No. 1 Singles, Madison Westergard was third at No. 2 Singles. The No. 1 Doubles team of Lynae Haupt and Cynthia Gonzalez finished in first place and the No. 2 Doubles team of Bella Myers and Sadie Hermosillo finished first. Next for the team is the Hoisington Invitational on Tuesday.
