Russell, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Dalton Buehler rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns, as the Scott City Beavers shutout the Russell Broncos 55-0 Thursday night at Shaffer Field in Russell to end the 2012 regular season.

Russell put up a fight early on, as they collected two first downs on their opening drive. After the Beavers forced the Broncos into a punt, Buehler scored on the first play from scrimmage from 68 yards away, and a Brett O’Neil extra point made it 7-0 Scott City with 7:11 to go in the opening frame. After an O’Neil interception at Russell 43, Drew Kite was the recipient of a 43-yard touchdown catch from Brett with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter. After the extra point block it was 13-0 Beavers. Scott City’s third score of the quarter would once again be on the first play of the drive. From their own 43, Buehler found paydirt yet again from 58 yards away with 3:55 remaining in the first period. O’Neil would connect with Brenner Wells for the two-point conversion to make it 21-0 after the first quarter.

In the second stanza, Scott City would rack up 27 more points. Wells scored his first touchdown of the night from five yards out with 9:44 to go before halftime, and it was 28-0 after the extra point. Less than two minutes later, Tius Price returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown, which was Scott City’s second non-offensive score of the year. O’Neil’s extra point made it 35-0 Scott City. With 5:19 left before recess, Wells would find the end zone for a second time around in the quarter from five yards away to make it 41-0, and the extra point would be no good. Price added the final score of the half on an 80-yard scamper with less than a second remaining in the half. O’Neil’s extra point made it 48-0 at intermission.

The second half would see a running clock, due to a 45-point running clock rule requested prior to the game. On Scott City’s opening drive of the half, Wells found the end zone on a one-yard plunge with 8:14 left in the third quarter. Sloan Baker would put the final point on the board for the night on the point-after attempt to make it 55-0.

Scott City’s win was their 37th consecutive regular season victory, and was the first win against the Broncos in their first-ever meeting. The Beavers unofficially had 405 yards on the ground, and 465 yards of total offense. Brett O’Neil was two-of-three passing for 60 yards and a touchdown pass, both completions were to Drew Kite. Russell ended up with 95 yards of offense, all on the ground. O’Neil and Brayden Strine picked off Bronco quarterback Alex Baldwin for the games two turnovers.

Scott City will host Cimarron Tuesday night in the Bi-District round of the Class 3A State Playoffs. The Blue Jays are 7-2 and were the District 16 Runners-up, after a 34-14 setback to Holcomb Thursday night. Cimarron has had a five-game turnaround from last year, and were an opponent for the Beavers the last two years in district play.
