Scott City and Colby split GWAC doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers returned home for the first time in a month, as they hosted the Colby Eagles in a GWAC doubleheader. On Friday night, the teams split lopsided games, as the Lady Eagles won 48-23, while the Beaver boys pounded Colby 83-27.

In the first game of the night, Colby scored the games first 19 points and led 19-0 after the first quarter. Scott City (2-4, 0-2 GWAC) would only pour in seven first half points, all from the free throw line. Their first points of the game came with 7:41 left before halftime. The Lady Eagles would lead 26-7 at intermission as both teams scored seven second period points. In the third quarter, Colby (2-5, 2-1) extended their lead to 36-12, and used a 12-0 run to lead by as many as 30 at 48-18 late in the game, before the Lady Beavers scored the games final five points. Scott City did not hit their first field goal until the 6:48 mark of the third quarter, a span of 17:12 to start the game. Colby finished with two players in double figures, led by Shalia Giebler with 14 points, while Brenly Terrell added 13. Scott City was led by Bailey Latta’s 10 points.

Much like the girls game, the boys game was one sided. Scott City took Colby out of the game early on and didn’t let up. The Beavers closed out the final 5:05 of the opening period on a 17-2 run to lead 24-6 at the end of the first frame. Their lead would grow to 50-13 at the break. Scott City (6-0, 2-0 GWAC) would score 29 straight points in a seven minute, 30 second span of the second and third quarter before Colby scored their first points of the second half. The Eagles scored back to back points for the first time in the game, scoring five straight in the final 90 second of the third frame, as Scott City held a 73-21 lead going into the final period. A running clock was used in the fourth quarter, as the Beavers outscored Colby (0-6, 0-3) 10-6. Scott City had four players score double figures, as Brett Meyer led the charge with 17 points, while Trey O’Neil added 15, and Chantz Yager and Bo Hess had 10 points apiece. Colby got a team-high eight points from Brooks Curry.

Up next for Scott City is a trip to GWAC rival Holcomb on Tuesday. Holcomb split a doubleheader at Ulysses on Friday, as the Lady Longhorns fell 65-43, while the Holcomb boys held off Ulysses 65-61. Both Scott City and Holcomb’s boys enter Tuesday night undefeated. Colby will host longtime foe Goodland. The Cowboys dropped their game at home to Hugoton 63-32, while the Cowgirls fell to the Lady Eagles 69-42.
