Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their final games before mid-season tournament play, the Scott City Beavers split a doubleheader with the Colby Eagles Friday night at Scott Community High School. The girls game saw Colby double up Scott City 50-25, while the Beaver boys thumped the Eagles 65-27.

Both teams started with a slow pace in the first couple minutes of the game. Colby would start off with a 6-0 lead about halfway through the first period. Scott City would score just two baskets in the first quarter, and trailed 12-4 after one quarter. In the second period, the Eagles would outscore the Lady Beavers 16-6 to take a 28-10 lead before the break, including five straight in the final 25 seconds before halftime. That five-point spurt before the break would turn into an 11-0 run until Scott City scored their first points of the second half on a pair of free throws by Shanaya Hoeme. Colby opened up their lead to 42-16 going into the final quarter. In the final frame, the Lady Eagles went on an 8-3 run in the first four minutes of the period to force a running clock with the score at 50-19. The Lady Beavers scored the final six points of the night, to make it 50-25. That was the only time where they scored back-to-back buckets all night. Scott City (1-6, 1-3 GWAC) was led by Shanaya Hoeme with a season-high 11 points. Colby (4-3, 2-1) was paced by Lauren Bell’s 13 points and Haileigh Shull’s 10.

Game two of the night saw two teams on opposite ends of the spectrum. Colby came out, slowed the pace early on, and actually led 4-0 two minutes in. That’s when Scott City started to get things moving on the offensive end, and outscored the Eagles 16-8 in a five minute, 40 second span to lead 16-8 after one quarter. Including the tip-in by Drew Kite with a tenth of a second in the first quarter to the 4:14 mark before intermission, the Beavers went on a 16-0 run, and the scoring spree would be 27-4, and Scott City led 41-12 at the break. It was a continued domination to begin the second half for the Beavers, as they scored the first six points of the second half, and took a 61-18 lead into the final period. With a running clock due to a 30-point plus lead, the Eagles would outscore Scott City 9-4, and the final score would be 65-27. Scott City (7-0, 4-0 GWAC) had only two players in double figures, led by Drew Kite with a game-high 14 points, and Trey O’Neil added 12. The Beavers had six players score at least six points. Colby (0-7, 0-3) was led by Todd Kane’s nine points. This was the third straight game that Scott City held an opponent without a double figure scorer.
