Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Sometimes winning doesn’t come easy. It also may not be pretty. What matters in the end is if you have the mark in the win column instead of the loss column. Scott City didn’t have one of their best performances Friday night against the Goodland Cowboys, but found a way to dig deep and take their GWAC season finale with a 28-14 victory at Darner Field.

Goodland would be the first team to score, taking advantage of a muffed punt return by the Beavers. With 6:41 left in the first quarter, Garrett Taylor rushed the ball in from five yards out. Trey Teeter’s extra point made it 7-0 Goodland. On the ensuing kickoff, Teeter kicked it at an angle. No Scott City player was able to get to it and the Cowboys continued their ball control. Goodland would keep the ball for the first 9:07 of the ballgame, as an interception in the end zone ended the Cowboys’ drive. The Beavers would be stopped on their opening drive for just the second time this year, as they were unable to convert a fourth down inside the Goodland seven yard line.

In the second quarter, momentum would shift to Scott City’s side. The Cowboys would not convert one first down, and the Beavers got on the board for the first time. A nine play, 51-yard drive would end in a Brayden Strine two-yard run with 4:24 remaining in the first half, and Tim Bolle’s extra point kick tied the game at seven. Scott City would get the ball for one more drive before the break. An eight-play, 82-yard drive gave the Beavers the lead for good, as Trey O’Neil floated one over the top of the Goodland defender, into the hands of Chantz Yager, who was standing on the goal line from 21 yards away. Bolle’s PAT made it 14-7 Scott City with 54 seconds left before halftime.

Both defenses started out solid in the third period. One play after Brett Meyer threw an interception that gave Goodland great field position at the Scott City 40, Chris Pounds picked off Teeter, taking it to the Cowboy 29. Five plays later, Paco Banda found paydirt from 18 yards away. Bolle’s extra point made it 21-7 after three quarters.

The Cowboys had been threating to make it a one score game in the fourth quarter, but the Beaver defense rose to the occasion the first time, forcing a turnover on downs at the Scott City 7. On third down, O’Neil would be picked off by Goodland’s Trey Teeter at the 31 yard line. Five plays later on fourth and goal from the 10, Teeter would find Kolt Traschel, who held the ball over the goal line, and Teeter’s PAT made it 21-14 with 5:30 remaining. Scott City would make it a two score game on their next drive. A few plays after converting a fourth down, Martin Gough took the sweep to the left side, and scored from 28 yards out with 2:54 remaining, and it was 28-14 after Bolle booted in his fourth extra point. The Cowboys had one more chance, but a Sloan Baker interception sealed the deal, as he got it off a deflected ball, and Scott City ran out the clock and picked up their fifth win of the season.

For the game, Trey O’Neil was 5-of-15 for 110 yards, with a touchdown and interception. Paco Band was Scott City’s first 100-yard rusher of the season, carrying the ball 18 time for 104 yards and a touchdown. The leading receiver for the Beavers was Brayden Strine, who had two grabs for 45 yards. Goodland was led by Trey Teeter, who finished 14-of-3o for 105 yards, a touchdown pass and three interceptions. His leading receiver was Kolt Trachsel, who had a touchdown reception and 59 receiving yards on nine grabs. Leading rusher for the Cowboys was Teeter, who had 37 yards on seven carries. Scott City outgained Goodland 317-170, and both teams committed three turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has now won 10 straight in the series, and improved to 5-1 overall, and finished 4-1 in GWAC play. The Beavers have now finished no worse than second in their league since 2004. Goodland dropped their third straight game, and fell to 3-3 on the season, 1-3 in Great West Activities Conference Play.

Scott City begins district play at Hoisington on Friday, while Goodland will travel to Clay Center for district play as well.
