Scott City Closes Out Classic With a Split Against Wichita Trinity
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City faced their first opponent from the Sunflower State Saturday night to round out the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic, as Wichita Trinity visited Scott City. For the third straight night, the Beavers would split a doubleheader, as the Lady Knights down the Lady Beavers 58-37, while the Beaver boys prevailed 82-67.
In the girls game, Scott City and Wichita Trinity would trade the lead five times, and were tied twice through the first quarter and a half. The Lady Beavers had their first lead this season after the first quarter, with a 12-9 advantage going into the second period. Wichita Trinity took the lead for good with 4:25 remaining before halftime at 15-14, which was included on an 11-0 run to give them their biggest lead of the half at 22-14. Scott City would cut the Lady Knight lead to three before Trinity scored the final four points in 10 seconds to lead 26-19 at half. Between the second and third quarters, the Lady Beavers saw Wichita Trinity go on two 11-0 runs, and a 7-0 run. Scott City struggled scoring in those two quarters, putting up a combined 11 points in the second and third frames, and trailed 40-23 going into the final period. The Lady Knights would continue to trade baskets in the final eight minutes with the Lady Beavers, and cruised to their first victory of the season. Wichita Trinity (1-3) had four players in double figures, led by 5-8 sophomore Caroline Zielke with 13 points, Kristin Miller with 11 and Shiloh Miller and Kelli Henderson added 10. Scott City (0-3) got a game-high 20 points from Janessa Lowenthal.
The weekend finale was all Scott City from the beginning, despite a first half rally from Wichita Trinity. Through the first three and a half minutes, the Beavers scored the first 13 points of the game. In a two minute stretch of latter part of the first and first minute of the second quarter, Wichita Trinity went on a 12-0 run, all on three pointers, and cut Scott City’s lead to 19-17 with 7:10 remaining before halftime. The Beavers would respond and coast the rest of the way. In the second quarter alone, Scott City went on an 8-0 run and a 12-0 run en route to a 46-30 lead at the break. In the second half, the Beavers would continue to pull away, and led by as many as 25 with 2:10 remaining in the third stanza at 67-42. With the game in doubt, Wichita Trinity did make a run in the fourth quarter, and pulling to within 12 at 79-67 at the 1:17 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Beavers scored the final three points late to make the final 82-67. Scott City (3-0) had four players score at least 16 points in the game, led by Drew Kite with 20, Trey O’Neil had 18, and Brett O’Neil and Joey Meyer finished with 16 points. Wichita Trinity (1-3) was paced by Matt Jones with 16 points, while Ryan Miller added 15 and Tyler Burns finished with 11 points.
Scott City will have one more game before the Christmas break, as they will host Ulysses in their GWAC opener, while Wichita Trinity hosts Belle Plaine for their home opener Tuesday.
