Wamego, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)—On a great day to run on Saturday, the Class 3A State Cross Country meet made its way back to Wamego for the first time since 2010 at the Wamego Country Club. The area athletes and teams that qualified for state last weekend would see good results to close out the season.

The first race of the day was the boys race. Scott City would put together a third place finish with 100 points. SE of Saline won their third consecutive state title with 58 points, followed by Smoky Valley with 62. Lakin finished in seventh with 143 points. Leading the way for the area was Cimarron’s Damion Santisteven, who finished in eighth place, while Edwin Garcia of Lakin was ninth. Scott City’s Roberto Apodaca placed 11th, Lawson Beymer from Lakin was 16th and Holcomb’s Daegan VanPelt was the final individual medalist, placing 10th.

It was the highest finish for Scott City since 2017, when they place third in Class 3A.

For the girls race, Southeast of Saline would take home the girls team title with 62 points. Scott City finished in second with 78, and fellow GWAC member Cimarron took third as a team with 89 points. Colby had three runners place in the top nine, but did not have enough runners to field a team. Leading the way for area runners was Ozia Trujillo from Southwestern Heights, who finished in second, and Cimarron’s Courtney Clinesmith would be the second area medalist, finishing in 18th place. Scott City’s leading runner was Brinie Stevens, who placed 24th.

For Scott City, it was their highest finish since winning the Class 3A State Championship in 2018. It was Cimarron’s highest finish since 1983, when they won the Class 2A State title.
