Scott City Boys Rout Dumas, Girls Fall Short
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In night two of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic in Scott City on Friday night, the Scott City Beavers saw a split with their opponent for the second straight night. Dumas won the girls game 54-40, while Scott City took the boys game 76-27.
The Lady Beavers looked as if they put away what happened on night one early, leading 10-2. A 12-2 run by the Demonettes would give Dumas a 14-12 lead after the first quarter. In the second period, Dumas would pull away a little farther, outscoring Scott City 20-8 in the second eight minutes to take a 34-20 lead at the break. The Demonettes used two runs of six straight points to build up that lead. Dumas would lead by as many as 15 points at 39-24, that’s when Scott City would make a comeback. Between the 3:11 mark of the third quarter and the 6:46 mark of the fourth period, the Lady Beavers scored 13 straight to pull to within 39-37. With a couple chances to tie, Scott City would see that be the closest they would get to Dumas the rest of the night. To close the game, the Demonettes used a 15-3 run in the final 5:55 to pick up their fifth win of the season. Dumas (5-7) was led by Katie Campbell with 14 points, and Jaci Eudey added 10. Scott City (0-2) was paced by Janessa Lowenthal’s 12 points and Bailey Nickel’s 11.
In the second game of the night, it was all Scott City, despite Dumas leading 4-2 early in the game. The Beavers would go on an 11-0 run to lead 13-4 after the first eight minutes. Scott City would also use runs of 11-0 and 8-0 to put the game away for good in the second period, taking a 35-11 lead at the break. It was much the same for the Beavers in the third quarter, as they clamped down tighter on the Demons, using a 15-0 run to lead 54-13 with under a minute remaining in the third frame. Taking a 59-20 lead going into the fourth quarter, Scott City played all reserves, and outscored Dumas 17-7 to win 76-27. All 11 Beavers that checked into the game scored, and had three players in double figure scoring. Drew Kite once again led Scott City (2-0) with 18 points, while Trey O’Neil added 14 and Brett Meyer had 10 in the fourth quarter in his first ever varsity game. Dumas (2-8) didn’t have anyone reach double figures for a second straight night, but were led by Jordan Hutcherson’s eight points off the bench.
Scott City will host Wichita Trinity Saturday at 5 pm, while Dumas faces Garden City at 5 pm.
