Scott City boys repeat, Phillipsburg girls win 83rd Scott City Relays

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–At the midway point of the track season, you couldn’t ask for better weather on Tuesday for the 83rd annual Scott City Relays at Darner Field. Overall, 15 teams comprised of the field this year with four classifications represented. It would be many repeat winners from previous Scott City Relays taking the top spot.

On the girls side, Phillipsburg showed balance and coasted to the team title, while Hoisington finished second, edging Cimarron, two-time champion Scott City and Colby. Laiten Greesen from Sublette put together another solid performance, taking home the 100M and 200M Dashes for a third straight year. As for Cimarron’s Clara Bartlett, she helped the newcomers to the meet to a third place finish, winning the 800M run, and was the anchor of the 4x800M Relay. Hoisington’s Samantha Colson swept the hurdles races. Scott City had a good day, with freshman Clare Hawkins winning a competitive 3200M Run, and the Lady Beavers repeated as the 4x400M Relay winner.

For the boys, there would be no doubt who was taking the team title. Scott City put together a solid day to take home their fourth consecutive relays title. Colby finished in a distant second and Stanton County was third. Jack Thomas led the way for the Beavers win wins in the 1600M and 3200M Runs, while Wyatt Hayes won the 800M Run, and was the anchor of the winning 4x400M and 4x800M Relays, while Kaden Wren took home the gold in the 400M Dash, and was on the 4x400M and 4x800M Relays. Parker Vulgamore won the javelin and was on the winning 4x100M Relay, and Marshall Faurot won his third straight 110M High Hurdles race, and was the anchor on the 4x100M Relay. Scott City won nine of the 18 events. Stanton County’s Creed Puyear was a double winner in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, while Colby’s Jordan Schippers finished as four-time champion in the 100M and 200M Dashes.

Three records were broken. The Cimarron girls broke the 4x800M Relay record with a time of 10:08.80, breaking the record set by Ulysses in 1999 at 10:16.07. Scott City’s Jack Thomas broke a 46-year old record in the 1600M Run, winning with a time of 4:21.73, breaking the record set by Scott City’s Roger Winter, who ran a 4:28.90 in 1973. The Scott City 4x100M Relay team broke the meet record with a time of 43.88, which was previously set by Lakin in 2001 with a time of 43.95.
