Scott City boys pummel Colby, girls upset bid falls short

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the final four games of the regular season, it’s all Great West Activities Conference games for the Scott City Beavers. Friday night, the Beavers hit the road for the second to last time in the 2014-15 season, as they face the Colby Eagles in the Colby Community Building. At the end of the night, the Beavers and Eagles split a doubleheader, as Colby pulled away late in the girls game to take a 34-25 victory, while the Beavers boys led from start to finish in an 80-20 rout.

The first game of the night saw a different game than the first two games. Colby (8-8, 4-3 GWAC) dominated the first two matchups with Scott City, winning by 25 and 31 points. This one would have a different feel. To the surprise of many, the Lady Beavers led 5-4 after the first quarter, and 7-4 early in the second quarter. The Lady Eagles would respond and use a 7-0 run of their own to lead 13-9 with 3:20 left in the first half. Both teams traded baskets to make it 15-11 Colby at the break. They also traded three’s to open up the second half. After Scott City (3-14, 0-7) scored six straight points, Colby scored the final three points of the third period to take a 21-20 lead heading in the final frame. The Lady Beavers scored the first four points of the final quarter to lead 25-21 with 5:25 remaining, it looked like they might have a shot at picking up their first league win of the season. They dodged bullet after bullet from Colby for a while, but the Lady Eagles would chip away, forcing turnovers and scored 11 of their 13 points from the foul line in the final 4:20 of the game to pull away for the 34-25 win. The game saw six ties and six lead changes. Colby was led by Shalia Giebler’s 13 points, while Scott City’s Bailey Latta led the Lady Beavers with nine.

While the girls game was competitive up until the final minutes of the game, the boys game was not. Scott City led 5-0 early on, and closed out the final 2:24 of the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead 20-6 after the first eight minutes. Midway through the second quarter, the Beavers used an 11-0 run, and led by as many as 29 in the first half at 41-12 with 3:52 left before the half. Colby (0-16, 0-7) would make their final run with five straight, but Scott City (16-1, 6-1) would score six of the final eight points of the half to take a 47-19 intermission lead. The Beavers scored at least 20 points in the first two quarters, and more than doubled their point total in the third quarter alone. They scored the second half’s first 10 points and 15 of the first 18 points as they pushed their lead to 76-29 after three quarters. Scott City would score all four points from the foul line in the final eight minutes of a running clock. Not only did they close the final 8:21 on a 10-0 run, they held the Eagles to without a field goal for the final 8:45 of the game. Scott City had a season-high five players in double figures, led by Trey O’Neil with 20 points, Sloan Baker with 16, Chantz Yager and Brett Meyer each had 13, and Dylan Hutchins had 12 points off the bench for the Beavers, who have now won 10 straight games. Colby got 11 points from Ashton Russ, as they have now lost 23 straight games.
