Scott City boys hold off Cimarron

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first two matchups between the Cimarron and Scott City boys were postponed, and Saturday afternoon, the teams finally were able to face off at Cimarron High School. While the Beavers led it most of the way, the Bluejays would make a push late. Scott City would hold off Cimarron in the end and pick up the 45-40 road win.

The opening eight minutes would see the lead change five times. Cimarron led 9-8, before the Beavers scored the first six points of the second quarter to lead 14-9 with 6:17 left before the break. Cimarron would score the next five points to pull to within 14-13 with five minutes left in the half. Scott City scored eight of the 11 points of the half to take a 22-18 lead.

To begin the second half, the Beavers would start off with an 11-3 run and grabbed their largest lead of the game at 33-21 with 2:35 left in the third quarter. That’s when Cimarron would come to life. The Bluejays would close out the quarter on a 7-3 run to pull to within 36-28 heading into the fourth period.

In the final quarter, Scott City would push their lead to 38-30 with 6:18 left. They would go scoreless for the next five minutes, as Cimarron scored the next seven points to pull to within 38-37 with 4:19 left. The Bluejays had their chances to take the lead, but the Beavers found a way to maintain the lead, using good defense. Scott City would get a deep two from Lawson Bailey to push the lead to three, which led the Beavers to scoring the next five points down the stretch. Cimarron would hit a last second three to make the final 45-40.

Leading the way for Scott City was by Gus Hawkins with eight, while Blaine Culp and Lawson Bailey added seven. The Beavers shot 6-13 from the line and had 16 turnovers. Cimarron was led by Braxton Harrison with 16 points and Storm Flores with 12, as they went 5-6 at the line and finished with 13 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has improved to 15-0 vs Cimarron since 2005, and picked up their second road win of the year. After struggling to score for the first half of the year, the Beavers have scored 45 or more points in six of their last seven games.
