Scott City Boys Advance to Sub-State Semi’s, Girls End Season at Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beaver boys and girls split their games on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 3A Sub-State Basketball Tournament. In Cimarron, the Lady Beavers put up a good fight against the undefeated and top-seeded Lady Blue Jays, but fell 70-52, and the boys took down Lakin for a second time this season with a 64-35 at home.

In the girls game, the Lady Beavers got off to a good start against the second ranked team in Class 3A. Scott City led the Lady Bluejays 14-10 after the first quarter, and led by as many as six in the first half. After leading 20-15 with 5:12 remaining before halftime, the Lady Beavers got into foul trouble with two starters picking up three fouls, and had two others with two fouls. During that stretch, Cimarron used a 17-2 run to take a 32-22 lead at the break. In the second half, the Lady Bluejays expanded their lead, building a 50-37 lead after three quarters. The Lady Beavers kept fighting, but the foul trouble for key players kept building, and Cimarron would lead by as many as 21 and would go on to win 70-52. Scott City was the second team that scored at least 50 on the Lady Bluejays all season. They were led by Shanaya Hoeme with 18 points and Janessa Lowenthal with 16 in their final games as a Scott City Lady Beaver. Bailey Nickel added 10. The Lady Beavers finish their season at 3-18. Cimarron improved to 21-0, and had three players in double figures, led by Ashtynn Burns and Morgan Ediger with 21 points, and Eva Koopman with 18. The Lady Bluejays will face the winner of Cheney or Lakin Thursday night.

At Scott Community High School, the Beaver boys struggled from the field early on, and eventually pulled away to advance on to Friday’s Sub-State Semi-Final. After leading 14-8 after the first quarter, Scott City used a 19-9 run to take a 33-17 halftime advantage on Lakin. The Beavers almost doubled their first half scoring in the third quarter alone, scoring 27 points to lead 60-30 after three quarters. A running clock was used in the final quarter, and Scott City put it on cruise control to win their 20th game of the season. Two Scott City Beavers eclipsed the 1,000-point total of their careers in the game. Brett O’Neil needed two points to accomplish that feat. He finished with nine points. Drew Kite needed 10 points for 1,000 points in his career, and finished with a career-high tying 28. Kite hit the 28-point plateau for the second time this season, the first since Liberal. He also scored 28 against Lakin last season. Tyler Hess was the second player in double figures with 10 points. Dalton Shalberg finished with 17 points for the Broncs, who end their season at 7-14. Scott City (20-1) will take on Southwestern Heights Friday night in rural Kismet. The Mustangs won a back and forth game in overtime 64-61 over Cimarron in Cimarron Tuesday night.
