Scott City blasts Russell

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–While the Scott City Beavers may have given up their first points of the year, they were able to handle business on Military Appreciation Night at Darner Field. On a cold and drizzly night, the Beavers scored on their first six possessions en route to a 56-7 win over the Russell Broncos in district play.

Scott City wasted little time scoring their first points of the game. A four-play, 69-yard drive was finished off by a Brandon Winderlin 15-yard run with 10:49 left in the first quarter to take the early 6-0 lead after a missed PAT. Russell would be backed up to their own three yard line on their first series. On first and long at their own three, the Broncos were called for holding in the end zone, resulting in a safety to make it 8-0 with 10:19 left in the first quarter. The Beavers scored three plays later on a Hunter Yager eight-yard run with 9:27 left in the first quarter to make it 15-0 with the Moses Hinojos PAT. Following a Bronco three-and-out, Scott City found the end zone again on a 61-yard drive, capped off by a one-yard run by Parker Vulgamore with 5:15 to go in the first quarter to adde to the lead at 22-0 with the Hinojos extra point. Russell would put together their lone scoring drive of the night, helped by a couple Beaver pass interference calls. On third down with 1:43 left in the first quarter, quarterback Austin Price  connected with A.J. Oste from 10 yards out to make it 22-7 with the Guilherme Vieira PAT. Scott City still had one score left in them. On the final play of the first quarter, Parker Gooden connected with Marshall Faurot on a 25-yard touchdown pass, making it 28-7. The extra point was blocked.

The Beavers added two more scores in the second quarter to lead 42-7 at the half. Brandon Winderlin found the end zone for the second time of the night on a four-yard run with 7:41 left in the half, and Hinojos’ extra point made it 35-7. Their final score of the half came with 3:56 to go on a Wyatt Hayes 29-yard run to push the lead to 42-7 with the Hinojos PAT.

Scott City scored on their second series of the second half. An 11-play, 84-yard drive that took four minutes was closed on five-yard Hayes run with 1:18 left in the third period to go up 49-7 with the Hinojos PAT.

Their final score came on a Loren Faurot seven-yard run with 3:01 left. Alexis Reyes kicked in the extra point, making the final 56-7. It was a running clock for the entire fourth quarter.

Parker Gooden went 5-9 passing for 116 yards with a touchdown and an interception. His leading receiver was Marshall Faurot, who caught two passes for 70 yards. Wyatt Hayes led the ground attack with 204 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Brandon Winderlin had 30 yards on five carries and two scores, Hunter Yager had 45 yards on six carries with a touchdown, and Parker Gooden had 49 yards on five carries. The Beavers ended up with 395 yards rushing and finished with 511 yards of offense, both season highs.

Russell saw Austin Price go 13-24 passing for 99 yards with a touchdown and an interception. A.J. Oste had six receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Whitmer had nine carries for 37 yards. The Broncos rushed for 61 yards, and finished with 160 yards of offense.

With the win, Scott City hit several milestones. The Beavers picked up win number 600 in program history, won their 30th consecutive district game dating back to week nine of 2008, and also clinched their 32nd straight non-losing season.

Scott City is 5-0 overall, 2-0 in district play, as they will play at Beloit next Friday night. The Trojans improved to 3-2 on the year, and 1-1 in district play, after a 52-14 win at Goodland. Russell is 2-3 on the year, and 0-2 in districts, and will host Colby next Friday. The Eagles defeated Concordia 49-8 to improve to 5-0 overall, and 2-0 in district play.
