Scott City blasts Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Friday’s game at Goodland, the Scott City offense had put up good numbers, but not as many points they are accustomed to. Defensively, they had been solid. In their district opener at Cowboys Stadium, the Beavers looked like a team that had something to prove. Scott City would score on their first six drives of the half, en route to a 55-0 win over Goodland.
After scoring only 28 points in the first two games, Scott City would match that, plus one in the first quarter. Their first score came on their opening drive, as Hunter Yager would score from five yards out with 8:23 remaining in the first quarter to go up 7-0 with the Alexis Reyes PAT. Goodland would have two consecutive bad snaps, and the second one would cost them. Facing third and 27 from their own five, Leyton Cure would take a bad snap and would be sacked in the end zone for a safety with 6:53 left in the first period, putting the Beavers up 9-0. A two-play drive was capped off by a Cale Goodman one-yard run with 6:12 left in the first put Scott City up 15-0. The two-point conversion was missed after a high snap. Goodman had a 60-yard run before his third touchdown of the year. The Beavers would finish with two more scores in the first quarter. Following a bad punt by the Cowboys, Parker Gooden scored from 23 yards out with 5:06 left in the opening frame, and with just under one minute left in the first period, Yager would score from 40 yards out to put Scott City up 29-0, with a pair of Reyes kicks.
Scott City added two more scores in the second quarter. The first was on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Harrison King to Justus McDaniel with 9:40 left in the first half to go up 36-0 after the Reyes PAT. Their second was set up by a Sawyer Stevens interception, as Brandon Winderlin punched it in from four yards out to go up 43-0 with 8:14 left in the first half after the Reyes kick. That would be the score at the break.
In the third period, the Beavers would force a running clock early on after a Kevin Serrano interception. With 8:21 left in the third period, Harrison King would score from two yards out on a busted play to make it 49-0 after the misses PAT. The final score of the night came on the final play of the game, when Jace Thomas scored from nine yards out to make the final 55-0.
Scott City put up a season-high 340 rushing yards, led by Cale Goodman with 92 yards on seven carries, and Hunter Yager picking up 81 yards on six carries. Harrison King completed his lone pass for 35 yards, and Lawson Bailey passed for 11 yards. The Beavers finished with 386 yards of offense, and had 17 first downs, and didn’t commit a turnover for the first time this season.
Goodland finished with 80 yards, with 68 coming through the air. Leyton Cure was 10-24 passing for 68 yards with three interceptions. His leading receiver was Henry Cole, who had two catches for 30 yards. Cure led the team with 27 yards rushing on 10 rushes.
