Scott City blanks Concordia to complete district sweep

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Friday night’s game, Scott City had the district wrapped up, and Concordia would be playing their final game of the year with nothing to lose. It took a little over a quarter for the Beavers to warm up. When they did, they were dominant, scoring on six consecutive possessions in a 42-0 win over the Panthers at Darner Field.

Concordia played keep away in the first quarter. After they went three and out, and forced a turnover on downs, the Panthers marched the ball down to the Scott City 12 yard line. On fourth down, the pass was knocked down, ending a 16-play drive that lasted just under seven minutes. 

Following a scoreless first quarter and an interception thrown, Scott City finally got the offense going. The Beavers converted a 62-yard pass play from Bo Hess to Kyle Cure on third and 10 that set up the Beavers at the Concordia 19. Two plays later, Kevin Aguilera scored on a 16-yard run with 7:09 remaining before halftime. Gustavo Gonzalez knocked in the extra point to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead. On Scott City’s next possession, they would take advantage of a short field, and it was a two play drove. Wyatt Hayes scored on a 29-yard run with 4:48 remaining in the half, and the Gonzalez PAT extended the lead to 14-0. With one timeout and 40 seconds, the Scott City marched it down the field. On fourth and 10 from the Concordia 29, Bo Hess launched it to the end zone, and Marshal Faurot hauled in the Hail Mary pass, giving the Beavers a 21-0 halftime lead with the Gonzalez extra point.

Scott City (7-2) marched it down the field on their opening possession of the second half. With 8:46 remaining in the third quarter, Hayes scored on fourth and goal from the one yard line to extend the Beaver lead to 28-0 with the Gonzalez PAT. Hayes would also score with 30 seconds in the third quarter on a five-yard run that capped off a six-minute, 11-second drive to extend the lead to 35-0 with the extra point by Gonzalez. 

The Beavers continued their dominance in the fourth quarter. Kevin Lozano found paydirt for the first time this year with 5:16 left on a one-yard plunge, and the Gonzalez extra point finished off the scoring at 42-0. 

After that 15-play drive by the Concordia (1-8), they had only 24 snaps the rest of the night, including three three and outs. 

Bo Hess threw for a season high 180 yards on 8-12 passing, with a touchdown and an interception. Kyle Cure was the leading receiver on his lone catch for 62 yards, while Jarret Jurgens had two grabs for 43 yards and Justin Faurot had three catches for 39 yards. Wyatt Hayes rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries with three touchdowns, while Kevin Aguilera added 59 yards on seven carries. Scott City ended with 416 yards of offense, and had 236 on the ground. 

Concordia’s Cole Larsen was just 4-12 for 41 yards. Matthew James had two catches for 24 yards. Rope Dorman carried the ball 17 times for 48 yards, after having 11 rushes for 36 yards in the first quarter. The Panthers finished with 95 yards of offense, including 55 yards on the ground. 

With the win, Scott City continues their district win streak to 25 games, dating back to week nine of the 2008 season. The Beavers have also won eight consecutive district titles, and have scored 105 consecutive points on their opponents, going back to the fourth quarter at Colby two weeks ago. Concordia’s 42 points surrendered were the most this season, eclipsing the 35 in a loss at Wamego 35-22 on October 7.

Scott City will host Holcomb on Friday, November 4, in the Regional round of the Class 4A, Division II Playoffs. It’s a rematch of the September 9 game which was the Longhorns won in Holcomb 32-13. The Longhorns pulled away from Hugoton in a 47-7 romp, scoring 19 points in the final quarter to improve to 8-1, while the Eagles finish the year at 5-4. In other GWAC play, Colby defeated Goodland 54-23, and will play at Pratt to begin postseason play. Ulysses pulled away from Wellington, winning 34-13, and will advance to the playoffs, as they travel to Maize South next Friday.
