Scott City baseball swept at Colby, tennis 2nd at Colby Invitational

Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Two of Scott City’s spring sports were in action on Friday in Colby. The baseball team faced the Eagles in a doubleheader, while the tennis team was in action at the Colby Invitational. It was a tough day for the Beaver baseball team, as they fell 10-5 in the first game, and 12-2 in the finale in six innings. The tennis team got a pair of first place finishes en route to a second place finish as a team.

Baseball
Scott City stayed toe-to-toe with Colby early on in the first game. They were tied at one after the first three innings, before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. They were able to hold that lead until the bottom of the sixth, when the Eagles scored nine runs to take a 10-4 lead. The Beavers scored once in the top of the seventh, but fell short 10-5. Aaron Hoopes had three of Scott City’s eight hits, and drove in a run. Kevin Herman took the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Game two was dominated by Colby early on as they scored four runs in the first inning, added four in the fourth, and scored two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to end the game in the bottom of the sixth at 12-2. Scott City didn’t score until the fifth and sixth innings, when they scored one run in each inning. Evyan Smith had two of the Beavers’ six hits in the game, while Brady Herman and Harrison King each drove in a run. King started and took the loss for the Beavers, allowing four earned runs in one inning on four hits.

Scott City is 3-6 overall, 0-5 in GWAC play, and will host Ulysses on Tuesday.

Tennis
Playing in their second meet in as many days, the Scott City tennis team finished second place overall at the Colby Invitational on Friday. Hays won the meet with 44 points, while Scott City had 42, and Colby’s varsity team finished third with 34 points. Joe Evans finished as the No. 1 Singles champion, going undefeated in pool play, and defeated Drew Starbuck of Colby in the finals 7-2 in their third meeting of the year. Evans lost to Starbuck the first time they matched up, but has won the last two meetings. At No. 2 Singles, William Cupp made it out of pool play on top, and won the division by knocking off Seth Hutfles of Colby 7-2. The No. 2 Doubles team finished second in their pool, and ended up taking third place. In their third place match, the team of Chase Cupp/Porter Irwin defeated Riley Kraft/Nathan Lee 7-1. As for the No. 2 Doubles team, they were second coming out of pool play, and finished fourth overall, as Miles Haire/Christian Wright fell to Trey Paul/Braxton Moral of Ulysses 7-2.

Scott City will host their own invitational on Monday afternoon to wrap up the regular season.
