Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in two separate places Tuesday, the Scott City baseball and softball teams played in their second doubleheaders in as many days. In Ulysses, Scott City got things rolling immediately, with three first inning runs, and never looked back. It was 5-0 for the Beavers heading into the bottom of the third, when the Tigers scored their lone two runs. Scott City would pick up three more runs in the next half inning to extend their lead to 8-2, and closed the door on the game with four additional runs in the seventh to take game one 12-2. Game two was played much tighter, but Scott City got runs when they needed them the most. Both starting pitchers were strikeout machines in the first two innings. The Beavers would score first in the second inning with two runs, the first on an rbi double by Chris Pounds scoring Hunter Braun from second. Pounds would later score on an error. After Scott City added another run in the third, Ulysses got two in the bottom of the inning and tied the game in the fourth on a double steal that tied the game. The Beavers retook the lead for good and scored the final runs of the game in the top of the fifth, capped off on Braun’s rbi ground rule double, scoring Collin Ratzlaff, to make it 6-3, and that would be the final. Hess would pick up the win, giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and struck out seven. Brett O’Neil came in and gave up one hit and struck out five to record the save in the final three innings. Pounds had a two-hit game, as Scott City outhit Ulysses 7-4. Chavez took the loss for the Tigers, allowing six runs, three earned on four hits and struck out nine 4 2/3 innings pitched.
At Scott City, the Lady Beavers had a tough time with Ulysses. In game one, had two four-run innings, and led 8-0 before Scott City scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nicole Latta drove in two of Scott City’s three runs, as the team had five hits.
In the finale, it was much the same, as Ulysses picked up from where they left off in game one, with four runs in the first inning. The Lady Tigers would score at least one run in each inning, capped off by a three-run seventh. Scott City closed the gap to 12-6 after five innings, but the four runs in the final two innings by Ulysses would be too much to overcome. Nicole Latta took the loss in the second game.
