Scott City baseball sweeps Spearville

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City would host Spearville on Thursday in their home opener of the season, in hopes of starting off the season at 4-0. The Lancers would be a good challenge for the Beavers, as the teams would go back and forth throughout. In the end, Scott City would collect the sweep, taking the first game 5-4, and rallied late for an 8-5 win.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Beavers would score the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second, as Lawson Bailey tripled, scoring JP Harris, and Blaine Culp would drive in Bailey to make it 2-0. Harrison King would add to the Scott City lead in the third inning on a two-out solo home run to make the score 3-0. Spearville would rally and tie the game up in the fourth, highlighted by a Jarrett Kliesen RBI double that scored Ethan Whie to tie the game up at three. The Lancers would grab a 4-3 lead in the fifth, takin advantage of a Scott City error, as Mason Dean reached and scored Kenny Zimmerman. However, the Beavers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, as Jeffery Nix’ RBI double drove in Brady Welker, and they were able to hold on for the one-run win.

Welker got the win in relief, going three innings, scattering two hits and struck out five. Harrison King went four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and struck out six. Easton Shenk took the loss for Spearville, going five innings, allowing five runs on six hits and struck out 11. Kliesen had two hits for the Lancers.

The nightcap would see a back and forth battle between the teams. Spearville would lead 1-0 early on a two-out single by Joshua Cox that scored Tanner Miller. Scott City responded with a run in the bottom of the first, thanks to a Harrison King RBI triple that scored Easton Lorg. In the second, the Beavers would take advantage of a couple throwing errors, as they plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lancers responded with two runs of their on in the top of the third, as Ethan White’s Single drove in Easton Shenk to pull them to within 4-3. They tied the game in the fourth inning on a Kenny Zimmerman solo shot over the left center field fence and took the lead on a passed ball to go up 5-4. Scott City tied the game at five in the bottom of the fifth on a Blaine Culp RBI single that scored Jeffery Nix. The Beavers would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, as Harris delivered an RBI single, and Ryan Cure grounded reached base on a fielders choice that scored Nix.

Jeffery Nix would get the win in relief for Scott City, going the final two and two-thirds innings, striking out three and didn’t allow a hit. Easton Lorg gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out 12 in four and a third innings pitched. Logan Hubbell took the loss for Spearville, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits with five strikeouts. Kenny Zimmerman went the first three innings, and gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits and struck out four.

Scott City is now 4-0 overall, and will play at Holcomb on Tuesday in a battle of teams that are 2-0 in GWAC play. Spearville is 0-2 and will take on Ellis on Monday.
