Scott City baseball splits, softball sweeps, golf competes in Goodland, tennis 3rd at Trego

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a busy Tuesday for SCHS athletics, as baseball traveled to Spearville for a doubleheader, golf was at the Goodland Invitational, softball played a doubleheader at Southwestern Heights, and the tennis team was at the Trego Round Robin.

Baseball
Scott City was able to split a doubleheader, picking up their first win of the season in the process.  In their first game, the Beavers won 3-2 in a low-scoring affair. They scored a run in each of the first two innings, and tacked on another run in the fifth. Spearville scored in the fourth seventh innings. Scott City had three hits in the game, with two coming from Blaine Culp. Alex Depperschmidt scored two runs and drove in a run. Kevin Herman went six-plus innings, giving up two runs on four hits and struck out 11. Aaron Hoopes picked up the save. In game two, the Lancers jumped out on Scott City early on, scoring six runs in the second inning, and put up two runs each in the next three innings. Down 10-2 after the fourth inning, the Beavers added three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, as their comeback efforts fell short. Harrison King took the loss for Scott City, giving up five runs on three hits in one-plus innings. Zach Carson and Evyan Smith drove in two runs, as the Beavers had seven hits, with one hit for seven different batters. Scott City is 1-4 on the year, and are scheduled to play at Goodland on Friday for a make up game at 4 pm. The varsity will play the first game, while the jv will play the second game at 6.

Softball
Scott City improved to 4-0 on the season, with a pair of five-inning run-rule games on Tuesday at Southwestern Heights. In their first games in almost two weeks, the Lady Beavers never trailed and put away the Lady Mustangs early on. Scott City led 2-0 after an inning, 6-0 after two and added five in the fourth and four in the fifth inning to win by the run rule 15-3. Southwestern Heights scored all their runs in the third inning. Macie Price had three hits and drove in two runs, while Lyndi Rumford added three hits. Amanda Lara drove in three runs for the Lady Beavers, who finished with 16 hits in game one. Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the win, going five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out seven. In game two, Scott City blew the game wide open with six runs to take an 8-0 lead, and led 10-0 after two and a half innings, before Southwestern Heights scored their lone run. The Lady Beavers added three more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth for the 14-1 win. Macie Price would have two hits and drive in three runs, while Kaitlyn Roberts and Kaitlyn Wolkensdorfer had two hits and drove in a pair of runs each. Scott City finished with 10 hits. Lyndi Rumford picked up the win in the circle, giving up a run on five hits and struck out three in five innings of work. Up next is a doubleheader at Stanton County on Friday.

Golf
Only two golfers participated each day for the Scott City golf team. Monday, they went to the Holcomb Invitational held at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City. Jackson Lewis finished in a tie for eighth with a round of 87, and Dexter Gooden finished 28th, firing a 108. Cimarron won the team title. Tuesday, they headed to the Goodland Invitational held at Sugar Hills Golf Course. In a meet that saw quite a few regional opponents, Jackson Lewis came in 17th with a round of 92, while Dexter Gooden was in 59th, shooting a 111. Goodland won the tournament. The golf team will be at Ulysses on Monday, and host their own meet on Tuesday.

Tennis
After seeing their meet at Hays moved from Monday to Tuesday, the boys tennis team was finally able to get the varsity out on the courts. On Tuesday, they played at the Trego Community Round Robin in WaKeeney, and finished third as a team. Joe Evans finished second at No. 1 Singles, the No. 1 Doubles team of William Cupp and Miles Haire placed second, Christian Wright was third at No. 2 Singles, while the No. 2 Doubles team of Chase Cupp and Porter Irwin placed third. They will compete at the Ellsworth Invitational on Thursday.
