Scott City baseball splits doubleheader with Spearville

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Spearville entered with unbeaten records on Thursday, as the teams would battle bone chilling weather and winds in Scott City. It would end up being a marathon type day, as the two games took nearly six hours combined on the day, as both teams would split the doubleheader. The Lancers blew the game open in the sixth inning in the opener, and took a 29-9 win, while the Beavers were able to walk it off in the finale in a 12-11 game.
Spearville 29, Scott City 9, Game 1 (6 Inn.)
Spearville scored the first run of the game in the opening frame, and would expand on their lead with seven runs in the third inning to go up 8-0. Scott City would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to pull to within 8-3. When it looked like the Beavers would get back in to the game, the Lancers had other inentions. They added to their lead with five runs in the top of the fourth, to lead 13-7. After the Beavers added four more in the fourth, the teams would go scoreless in the fifth inning. Spearville would send 19 to bat in the sixth inning, and scored 16 runs, while giving up a run to win 29-9.
Kaleb Konrade would have three hits and drive in six runs, while Ian Melendez and Austin Ruiz had three hits. Austyn Baugh drove in four runs, while Danny Alcala and Cooper Thompson drove in three runs apiece. Austin Ruiz went the first four innings and picked up the win, giving up seven runs, four earned, on five hits with five strikeouts. Emilio Contreras had three RBI with two hits for Scott City. Brooks Bailey took the loss, giving up eight runs, three earned, on four hits in 2 2/3 innings, while striking out two. Four pitchers were used for the Beavers in game one. Both teams committed six errors.

Scott City 12, Spearville 11, Game 2
The Lancers would come out solid with three runs on four hits in the top of the first, and took a 3-0 lead. Kaleb Konrade would hit a solo shot over the left field fence in the inning. Spearville extended their lead to 5-0 in the second inning, when the Scott City bats would come to life. The Beavers would score two in the bottom of the second and tie the game with three in the third. A five-run fourth inning pushed Scott City ahead 10-5, but the Lancers would slowly chip away. They put up three runs in the fifth, and with two outs in the seventh, would tie the game at 11 on a two-run single. Scott City had two on with no one out in the bottom of the seventh, as Emilio Contreras’s RBI single scored Spencer Cramer from second to help preserve a 12-11 win.
Easton Eisenhour pitched the first six innings, giving up eight runs on 12 hits with eight strikeouts. Emilio Contreras drove in three runs on four hits. Avery Radke pitched the seventh and picked up the win. Kaleb Konrade had three RBI in the second game for the Lancers, as he pitched the first three innings, giving up five runs. Ian Melendez took the loss, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Scott City is 5-1 on the year, and will face 5-1 Holcomb on the road in GWAC play on Tuesday. Spearville is 3-1 on the year, and will travel to Ellis on Tuesday.
