Scott City Baseball pounds Holcomb, faces Lakin Tuesday
Lakin (westernkansasnews.com)–For the third time this year, the Scott City Beavers faced Holcomb, and for the second consecutive season, they faced the Longhorns in the first round of the Class 3A Regional tournament. This years regional opener was a more one-sided affair for the Beavers as they had a seven-run second and an eight-run fourth inning to walk-off with an 18-3 win in a game called in the fourth inning. The Beavers scored in every inning at bat, including two in the first and one in the third inning. Going into the fourth inning it was 10-0 Scott City. Holcomb tried to mount a comeback and made it 10-3, but the eight runs scored by the Beavers in the bottom of the frame would end the game due to a run rule. Scott City scored 18 runs on only nine hits. Brett O’Neil had a tw0-hit game and drove in four runs, while Austin Habiger and Matt Zilla scored three times. Zilla got the win on the mound for Scott City, as he pitched all four innings, giving up three runs on four hits, and struck out six Longhorns. Holcomb ends their season at 4-17, while Scott City improves to 13-7.
In the first two games of the day, it was Goodland scoring a bulk of their runs in the sixth inning, and shut out Natoma/Plainville 11-0 in a game called after the sixth inning. The Cowboys are now 6-15, while Natoma/Plainville finishes 5-10. Lakin scored two insurance runs in the fifth inning, and completed the day with a shutout of Russell by the score of 4-0. The Broncs scored one run in the second and third innings, and improve to 18-2, while the Broncos end their season at 3-18.
Games today in Lakin will feature the top seed TMP-Marian (20-1) vs the fifth seed Goodland (6-15) at 2 pm, second seed Lakin (18-2) vs third seed Scott City (13-7) at 4:30, followed by the championship game at 7 pm.
