Scott City baseball drops season doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–With only three days of outdoor practice, and perhaps one of the youngest teams Scott City has fielded in quite some time, the Beavers knew their season opener against Ellis would be a difficult one. Unearned runs were the story of the afternoon for the Beavers, as they fell to the Railroaders 8-1 in the first game, and 13-1 in five innings in the second game.

Ellis scored a run in each of the first three innings, and took advantage of three Scott City errors early on. The Beavers would tie the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Harrison King that scored Easton Lorg to tie the game at one. In the fourth inning, two costly errors effected the Beavers, as Ellis took advantage with three runs to push their lead to 6-1. The Railers added two more runs in the sixth to make the final 8-1.

Tegan Cain and Talon Torline had three hits each for Ellis and Zach Eck drive in two runs. Carter Bollig went six innings on the mound, giving up an unearned run on one hit with 10 strikeouts. Harrison King took the loss for Scott City, going four innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on eight hits, with six strikeouts. Ronnie Weathers gave up two unearned runs on one hit in the final three innings. Easton Lorg had the lone hit in the first game for the Beavers, as they committed five errors.

You could tell the Beavers settled down in the second inning. And for the first four innings, they were very much in the game. Then the fifth inning happened. Ellis scored two runs in their first at bat to take the early 2-0 lead. Harrison King would drive in Easton Lorg in the bottom of the first to pull Scott City to within 2-1. It would remain that way, until the Railroaders added a run in the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Beavers had their chances to score in the third and fourth innings. They would have two costly outs on the bases, and left the bases loaded in the third. A major collapse would doom Scott City in the fifth. Ellis would blow the game wide open with a pair of Tegan Cain two-run singles. The Railroaders sent 14 to bat in the fifth inning and worked around a one-out walk to retire the side in the bottom of the fifth to complete the sweep.

Tegan Cain gave up an unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of work on the mound. He would also have three hits and drive in four runs. Ellis had seven hits and three errors. Easton Lorg gave up seven runs, five earned in four-plus innings of work. Lorg and Ronnie Weathers had both Scott City hits, as they had three errors in the second game.

Scott City will host Spearville on Tuesday, while Ellis hosts Ellsworth on Tuesday.
