Scott City Baseball Downs Hoisington, Game Two Ends Early

Hoisington, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The 2013 season has been one of the most unusual spring sports seasons around thanks to Mother Nature, and Tuesday was no different. After the first game was delayed by 30 minutes due to rain earlier in the day, Scott City was able to pick up their ninth win of the year in a 9-3 final. The Beavers led 12-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, before the game was called due to lightning approaching Hoisington. Scott City would have been able to count it as a win if the game had been called after five complete innings.

In game one, Scott City got on the board first, on an infield hit by Austin Habiger, scoring Drew Kite. Hoisington would score the next two runs, with a run in each of the first two innings. After a scoreless third inning, the Beavers would tie it on a Collin Ratzlaff single, scoring courtesy runner Brett O’Neil. With two away in the top of the fifth, Scott City would take the lead for good, on a two-out rbi-double by Austin Habiger, scoring Tyler Hess and Chris Pounds to lead 4-2. The score would double for the Beavers in the sixth inning with four runs, capped off by a two-run blast by Drew Kite over fence in left center field. After the Cardinals added a run to cut the deficit to 8-3, Ratzlaff would drive in yet another run, scoring O’Neil to make the final 11-3. Habiger went all seven innings to get the win, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, and struck out four. Kite had three hits, and was a triple shy of the cycle. Habiger helped his cause out by driving in three runs, while Ratzlaff and Kite each had two RBI.

Game two was shortened due to lightning quickly approaching the area. Scott City led from the very beginning, and took a 3-1 lead after one inning, 4-2 after two and 5-2 after three. In the top of the fourth, the Beavers sent 13 to bat, and scored seven runs. The would be called just before the bottom of the fourth inning, and unfortunately, it won’t be made up or count as a win, with Scott City up 12-2. Sloan Baker drove in four runs before the weather-shortened game, and Tyler Hess also had two RBI.

Scott City is now 9-8 on the season, and will travel to Goodland on Thursday to wrap up their regular season.
