Scott City baseball dominates Syracuse

Syracuse, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City has been on a roll over the past two weeks. Entering Thursday’s double header on a six-game winning streak, the Beavers looked to take the next step in hitting double digit wins. They would do that, and never trail during the day. Scott City would take two games, winning the first game 18-5, and completed the sweep with a 21-3 win in five innings over the Bulldogs.

Scott City 18, Syracuse 5, Game 1
It would take a couple of innings for Scott City to get going, but when they did, they would pile it on. After two scoreless innings, the Beavers would break the scoreless seal in the third inning. They would hang a seven spot on the board to take a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Jeffrey Nix would start the scoring with a two-run single that scored Harrison King and Blaine Culp. Culp would have two hits in the inning, and close out the scoring in that inning with a two-run single that scored Alexis Armendariz and Jose Trejo to give Scott City a 7-0 advantage. Syracuse would take advantage of Beaver errors in the bottom of the frame, was they got back in the game with four runs to pull to within 7-4. The Beavers would put the game in doubt in their next at bat, as they added six runs, capped off by the Kevin Herman two-run double that scored Trejo and Easton Lorg to give them the 13-4 lead. That score would hold up until the sixth inning, when both teams traded a run each. Scott City added four more runs in the seventh inning to make the final 18-5.

Scott City finished with 10 hits in the game, as Blaine Culp had two hits and drove in three runs, while Jeffrey Nix had two RBI and two hits. Easton Lorg, Kevin Herman and Alexis Armendariz also had two RBI in game one. Lorg went the distance on the mound, giving up five unearned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts, and gave up one walk. The Beavers would end up with six errors in game one. Uriel Diaz would take the loss for Syracuse, as he gave up 11 runs, eight earned on three hits, with 10 walks in three and a third inning. He had one of the teams four hits in the first game. Joe Mitchell, Cody Doze, Evan Westeman each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

Scott City 21, Syracuse 3, Game 2 (5 Innings)
The Beavers would pick up from where they left off in game one. They scored two runs in the top of the first a Kevin Herman RBI ground out and a Harrison King sacrifice fly to give them a 2-0 lead early on. In the third inning, Scott City would blow the game open with eight runs. In their eight-run third inning, six of the runs would come off the heels of a two-out error to push their lead to 10-0. The highlight of the rally was a three-run triple by Easton Lorg. Syracuse got their lone runs of the second game with three runs to pull to within 10-3. The Beavers added two in the fourth, and exploded with nine in the fifth, with Jordan Smith driving in two runs in a pinch-hit role. Syracuse couldn’t do much in their final at bat, as Scott City takes the game in five innings 21-3.

It would be a three RBI game for Easton Lorg. Blaine Culp had four hits and drove in two runs. Jeffrey Nix drove in three runs, while Jordan Smith, Kevin Herman, Harrion King, Alexis Armendariz each drove in two runs. Ronnie Weathers gave up three runs on one hits and had four strikeouts and walked four batters in two and a third innings. Nix would get the win for Scott City, striking out five and allowing two hits in two and two thirds innings. They had 15 hits in game two. Evan Westerman would have the lone RBI for Syracuse in game two, as they had three hits in the game. Gunnar Upson went four and a third innings, giving up 14 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and walked five batters.

With the two wins, Scott City has improved to 11-7. They not only clinched their first winning season since 2013, they have now won the most games since 2012, when they won 13 games in that season. The Beavers are also on an eight-game winning streak. They will host Holcomb on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season. Syracuse has dropped six straight and are now 2-13 on the season. They’ll take on Bucklin on Friday.
