Scott City and Ulysses split GWAC doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Friday night saw two longtime rivals battle at the Scott Community Events Center, as Scott City played host to Ulysses in GWAC play. It would end up being a split of the doubleheader, as the Lady Beavers picked up a 56-25 win, while the Tiger boys got hot from the field in the second half in a 63-46 win.

Scott City would jump out to the 5-0 lead and never looked back. The Lady Beavers led 17-6 after the first eight minutes of play, and couldn’t quite shake off Ulysses in the first half. Free throws would keep the Lady Tigers in the game, as they would pull to within 26-17 at the break. In the second half, it was all Scott City. The Lady Beavers used a 13-3 run in the first four minutes to build a 39-20 lead. Ulysses would get the lone field goal of the second half with 4:44 left in the third quarter, as Scott City scored the final nine points of the third frame to lead 48-22 after three quarters. The Lady Beavers led by as many as 33 in the fourth quarter, which prompted a running clock, and the final would be 56-25.

Amber Latta led Scott City with 20 points, while Erika Felker had a career-high 14 and Brooke Strine finished with 10. The Lady Beavers shot 11-16 at the free throw line and had 12 turnovers. Ulysses got six points apiece from Hayden Riley and Grace Murray, as they went 13-20 at the foul line. The Lady Tigers had 22 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City now leads the series 47-37 since 1980, and have won four straight in the series, and now nine of the last 13. The 56 points for the Beavers were a season-high.

While the game was close in the first half, Ulysses would continue their hot shooting in the second half and pull away. The Tigers never trailed in the game, and led 10-6 after the first quarter. Scott City had ample opportunities to tie or lead in the first half, but missed their chances each time. Ulysses used a 10-7 second quarter run to take a 20-17 halftime lead. To begin the second half, the Tigers got hot, going 10-13 from the field, and exploded for a 24-point third period to open up a 44-33 lead going into the fourth frame. They scored seven of the final nine points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Scott City would get it to within 11 points early on, as Ulysses started out with a 7-3 run and would score seven unanswered to lead 58-30 with 3:32 left. They would continue their hot shooting at the line down the stretch as they would pick up a 63-46 win to snap a two-game losing streak.

Lance Walker led the way for Ulysses with 26 points, While Aaron Galindo added 19 and Ryan Nightengale finished with 11. The Tigers went 18-26 at the foul line and had 15 turnovers. Scott City was led by Josh Rosin with 13 points, as they hit just seven of 18 free throws and committed 17 turnovers.

The Ulysses win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Tigers, as they won their first game in Scott City since 2017. Since 1980, Scott City leads the series 57-25, as they have won 19 of the last 23 in the series.
