Scott City and Holcomb renew gridiron battle
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)– Two GWAC rivals who are looking to get a leg up in league play battle tonight for the second straight season in Holcomb, as the Longhorns play host to the Scott City Beavers.
Scott City started off with a tough 31-21 setback to the Hays Indians last Friday night at Darner Field. The Indians led 10-0, before the Beavers took a 21-10 lead into the fourth quarter. Scott City committed four consecutive turnovers, which resulted in three touchdowns, giving the Beavers their first home-opening loss since 2003, when a Kent Teeter-led Hays Indian team beat Scott City 23-20. What hurt more was that Hays scored all three of their fourth quarter touchdowns on fourth down passes, which covered at least 19 yards. The Beavers did outgain Hays 306-246.
Holcomb picked up from where the left off, using a 27-point second quarter to dismantle Cimarron on the road 55-13 last Friday night. Trey Gilbert stepped in as the new Longhorn starting quarterback, and threw for 279 yards and seven touchdowns. The Longhorn defense forced five turnovers, had eight sacks, and allowed only 36 yards of total offense. Holcomb’s offense also produced 47o yards of total offense, despite committing four turnovers.
This will be the 14th meeting all-time in the series. Scott City has a 12-1 lead in the series, after picking up a 15-7 road win last year. That loss last season by Holcomb was their last, as they have won 10 straight games. The Longhorns only win in the series was in 2007, when they won 13-12.
