SCHS girls tennis wins regional title

Meade, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For most of the season, the Scott City girls tennis team always came short of winning a tennis meet, placing second at a majority of their meets this season. That changed on Friday and Saturday at the Class 321A Regional meet in Meade. The Lady Beavers would not only qualify two sets of doubles players and a singles player, but they would win the regional championship in dominating fashion.

Scott City finished with 19 points to win the Meade Regional, while Meade and Greeley County tied with seven points for second. Meade won the tiebreaker over Greeley County.

In singles, Abbie LeBeau was seeded second, and win her first match 6-1, 6-1, and her second match 6-0, 6-1. On Saturday, shed advanced to the finals with a 7-6(6-2) and 7-5 win and won the regional championship with a win over the top seed 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Madison Westergard came in as the ninth seed, and won her first match 7-5, 6-2, and would drop her second match 6-2, 6-4. On Saturday, Westergard fell just short of qualifying for state, dropping a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 decision.

For the doubles teams, Cynthia Gonzalez and Lanae Haupt came in as the second seed, and would advance to state by finishing in second place. They won 6-4, 6-4 in their first match, and then advanced to the semi finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win. On Saturday, they advanced to the finals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win, and fell in the finals in a 6-0 6-3 loss. The second doubles team from Scott City, Sadie Hermosillo & Bella Myers, won their first match as the fifth seed 6-4, 6-4, and would knock off the fourth seed on Friday to qualify for state. On Saturday, they fell in the semi finals 7-5, 6-3, and won the third place match with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Scott City will compete at the Class 321A State Tennis Meet on Friday and Saturday at the Harmon Park Tennis Complex in Prairie Village.
