SCHS cross country sweeps team titles at Ness City, tennis second at Ellsworth, volleyball 2-0 in Hugoton

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a good Thursday for three of the SCHS athletic programs that hit the road for their competiton. The cross country teams picked up a pair of team titles at the Ness City Invitational, while the girls tennis squad was second in a tough Ellsworth Invitational, and volleyball started off GWAC play 2-0 with a pair of wins in Hugoton.

Cross Country
Coming off a good performance at Rim Rock last weekend, the cross country teams had a quick turnaround, running at the Ness City Invitational. The boys took home the top spot with 35 points, while Hoisington was second with 54. Eric Frances led the way with a third place finish in a time of 17.39.50, followed by Jaxson Kough in fifth with a time of 18:03.20, and Roberto  Apodaca was eighth, running a 18:10.70. Eric Shapland placed 19th (18:58.90), Freddy Castillo 23rd (19:20.10), and Henry Aguilar was 33rd (20:03.00). The girls won with a team score of 19 points, and Wallace County was second with 47 points. Megan Vance led the way for the girls with a fourth place finish in a time of 21:25.10, followed by Piper Wasinger in fifth with a time of 21:44.80, and Kairae Berry was 10th, running a 22:59.20. Samantha Aguilar came across in 13th (23:46.60), Claire Rumford 19th (24:55.30), Alivia Noll was 20th (24:56.20) and Breanna McPherson finished in 22nd (25:08.90). It was each teams second team victory of the year. They will run at Lakin next Saturday, October 12.

Tennis
The girls tennis team is in their final couple meets of the season before regionals, and had a good Thursday at the Ellsworth Invitational, placing second as a team. Salina South finished with 36 points, while the Lady Beavers had 24. Scott City had a pair of second place finishes, as Abbie LeBeau was second at No. 1 Singles, and the No. 1 Doubles team of Cynthia Gonzalez/Lanae Haupt was also second. The No. 2 Doubles team of Sadie Hermosillo/Bella Myers placed third and Rhiley Stoppel was fifth at No. 2 Singles. Scott City will be at the Ulysses Invitational on Monday. 

Volleyball
Coming off an undefeated month of September, the Lady Beavers were in Hugoton Thursday, taking on Hugoton and Ulysses in a GWAC Triangular. Scott City would be 2-0 on the day, as they knocked off Hugoton 25-14, 23-25 and 25-19. They would turn around and defeat Ulysses 25-19, 25-20. The Lady Beavers are 17-2 overall, winning 12 straight, and 2-0 in GWAC play, and will play in Holcomb next Thursday in a GWAC quadrangular.
