SCHS cross country sweeps team races at Goodland, girls tennis wins Hays Invite, girls golf opens at Hugoton

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a good start to the season for the Scott City cross country teams on Thursday, as they sweep the team races at the Goodland Invitational, held at Sugar Hills Golf Course. In Hays, the Scott City girls tennis team continued their winning ways, as they picked up their second tournament win in as many meets at the Hays Invitational Thursday afternoon. With a full team to open the season, the Scott City girls golf team placed sixth at Hugoton on Thursday.

Cross Country
For the girls side, the Lady Beavers edge Oakley by nine points for the top spot. Scott City had 23 points, while the Lady Plainsmen had 32, and Goodland finished third. Two freshman led the way for the Lady Beavers, led by Emma Wheeler with a fifth place finish in a time of 21:02.93, Brinlie Stevens was sixth in a time of 21:27.71. Megan Vance finished eighth (21:42.81), Kairae Berry 11th (22:18.25), Macy Brown was 14th (23:17.41), Alivia Noll placed 23rd (25:39.86) and Kate Rogers finished 25 with a time of 26:16.40.

On the boys side, Scott City dominated the meet with a team score of 19. Holcomb was second with 70 points and Ulysses placed third. Leading the way for the Beavers was senior Roberto Apodaca, who won the meet with a time of 18:03. Right behind him in second was Aaron Armendariz in a time of 18:25 and in third place was Kevin Dominguez-Peregrino with a time of 18:33. Placing fifth was Anthony Wolfe (18:40), Jaxson Kough placed eighth (18:46), Dylan Duff 12th (19:48) and Bryndan Bailey finished in 14th with a time of 20:01.

Up next will be the Hugoton Invitational on Saturday, September 12. 

Girls Tennis
In Hays, the Lady Beaver tennis squad faced four other schools, and finished on top at the Hays Invitational. Just like the previous week at Cimarron, they would have just one first place finish. That belonged to the No. 1 Doubles team of Malorie Cupp/Bella Myers, as they picked up their first tournament win of the year. The No. 2 Doubles team Brynna Burnett/Rhiley Stoppel placed second, while Laia Mur placed third at No. 2 Singles. She defaulted her second to last match, and forfeited her final match, due to injury. Madison Westergard found herself in a three-way tie for second, and due to tiebreakers, ended up placing fourth at No. 1 Singles.  

They will play at Liberal and Hoisington on Tuesday. 

Girls Golf
Scott City was able to put a full team on the golf course for their first meet of the season on Thursday at the Hugoton Invitational, as they faced some good competition, mainly from GWAC schools. Colby won the meet with a team score of 193 in the nine-hole tournament, follwed by Garden City with 208 and Cimarron came in third with a team score of 219. The Lady Beavers finished sixth as a team with a score of 246. Individually, Paige Prewit finished with a score of 59, and in a tie for 22nd, Olivia Wagner tied for 28th with a score of 60 and Brylie Bennett tied for 30th with a round of 61. Tori Ford was 37th with a score of 66, Judy Wiebe 38th, shooting a 67 and Valeria Bejarano was 40th with a nine-hole round of 72. 

Scott City will compete in the Goodland Invitational on Tuesday.
