Sanders steps down as GCHS volleyball coach
Garden City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-After a little more than a season on the sidelines, Shandra Sanders resigned Thursday as Garden City High School Volleyball Coach, effective immediately.
“She (Shandra) resigned for personal reasons,” USD 457 spokesman Roy Cessna said. “This is a personnel issue, and we have no further comment at this time.”
Sanders took over the Buffaloes’ program last year and directed a veteran-laden squad within arms reach of the state tournament; they eventually bowed out to Wichita Northwest in the substate finals. 18 games into their 2014 campaign, Garden City is just 7-11, but they’ve played an ultra-competitive schedule that includes losses to top 10 teams Newton, Maize and Pratt.
As for who will be coaching the team long term: that has yet to be answered, although Athletic Director Martin Segovia said varsity assistant Abby Piha will take charge on Saturday in Tonganoxie with help from JV coach Desiree Pounds.
