Saloma Jane “Janie” Walters

Saloma Jane “Janie” Walters, 82, went home to Heaven on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit. She was born on June 22, 1933 in Pritchett, Colorado the daughter of Edgar R. and Blanche Pauline (Whittiker) Burr. 

Janie moved with her family from Colorado to Tribune and then to Dodge City. She attended school in Dodge City and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1951. Janie went on to further her education at Wichita State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1955. On June 23, 1957, she married Robert F. “Bob” Walter in Sublette. They shared 58 years of marriage. Janie was Mrs. Walters to hundreds of children she taught in the Sublette Grade School. She taught from 1969-1997, teaching kindergarten all but one semester. 

Janie had been a resident of the Satanta LTCU since May of 2009. She loved being involved in all the nursing home activities, especially bingo, dominoes, UNO, crafts, and all the various music group that would come in to perform. She always sang along with a big smile on her face. 

She was a member of the Sublette Christian Church. Janie also had a passion for teaching children about Jesus and the importance of having Him as Lord of their lives. She taught the 3rd & 4th grade Sunday school class for many years and saw many children give their lives to Jesus. Janie also started the Wee Worship program back in 1969 for children to be taught at their level in fun and engaging ways during the church service. She served at the VBS director for many years as well. 

She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was very important to her. She will be dearly missed by all of them. 

Janie is survived by her husband, Bob Walters of Satanta, two sons, Bill Walters and wife Teresa, Rockton, Illinois and Gary Walters of Liberal; two daughters, Velva Armstrong and husband Dave of Washington, Missouri, and Gayla Wood and husband Shane of Lincoln, Illinois; one sister, Donita Weece and husband Gene of Unionville, Missouri; two brothers, Bill Burr of Dewey, Oklahoma and Gary Burr of Hutchinson; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marita Deis; and one granddaughter, Meagan Opal Wood. 

Funeral service will be held at Sublette Christian Church on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel of Sublette on Monday, August 17, 2015 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Sublette Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
