Roberto was born in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up and attended school in Garden City. He later moved to Liberal. Roberto enjoyed listening to music, playing basketball, hand ball, playing dominoes and watching football. He also enjoyed reading, especially the Bible. Robert also enjoyed receiving Christian literature and had a collection of his favorite messages. He enjoyed spending time with his family whenever possible. 

He was preceded in death by his parents- Eugenio and Eufemia Ortega, two sisters-Manuela Andrada and Bernadina Porras.
