Robert A. (Bob) Strong

Robert A. (Bob) Strong, 86, of Dighton, Ks, lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease on December 14, 2016.

Bob was born in Hill City, Ks on October 16, 1930, to Arthur and Folsom Strong. He lived in Moreland, Ks, and then in Hill City, Ks, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He spent several years working on oil rigs for Shell Oil Company throughout Kansas and Colorado before he signed up for a two year tour in Korea with the United States Marine Corp where he was honored with the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Upon his return to the states he attended Wichita State University on the GI Bill where he earned a BA in Graphic Arts. After graduation he started the first of a long series of companies. His career included stints as an ad man, book illustrator, political consultant, graphic artist and ultimately publisher.

In 1955 he married Donna Gloege with whom he had two children, Greg and Brenda Strong. They ended their marriage in 1992. At the age of 62 Bob moved west to Garden City, Ks and then Dighton where he started a new publication, Feedlot Magazine. He and his son partnered on the magazine for 21 years growing it into a thriving business still operating in Dighton today. He was lucky and blessed to meet and marry Virginia Stramel in 2001. They enjoyed 15 years of happiness together.

Bob Strong was not a man who particularly enjoyed leisure, not as many of us would know it. He was not one to relax when there were things to be done. Throughout his life he pursued many passions including fishing, carpentry, painting, dancing, reading, arrowhead hunting, baking, candy making, and most of all gardening. Bob planted hundreds, if not thousands, of trees in his life.

Bob Strong will be clearly missed by those he left behind. His legacy will live on in his children, his wife, his friends, and of course, his trees.

Survivors include his wife Virginia Strong of Dighton, son Greg Strong (Andrea Strong) of Dighton, and daughter Brenda Strong (Brian Jones) of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Layton Strong, Don Strong and Betty Johnson.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev Berneice Ludlum officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Memorial lawn Cemetery in Hill City, Ks. The family has requested memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu
