Red Demons win third straight

DC at Liberal

LIBERAL — The Dodge City High School Red Demons ended the regular season on a high note with a 31-6 on the road at Redskin Field in Liberal on Friday night. The Red Demons finish the season 5-3, winners of three straight and will host the first round of the 6A state playoffs on Friday night against Junction City (4-4).

Dodge City got off to a slow start in the first quarter and trailed 6-0 after that quarter. The Red Demons knew they needed a win to at least have a chance at hosting for the first round of the playoffs.

The Red Demons came alive in the second quarter, getting a touchdown pass from Beau Foster to De’Jon Delgado from 24 yards out with 2:59 to go in the first half. Alexis Alvarez added the PAT to give Dodge City the 7-6 lead. The Dodge City defense then forced a turnover and capitalized on it with a 2-yard run up the middle from Foster to give the Red Demons the 14-6 lead with 21 seconds to go in the second quarter.

Alvarez would then add a 22-yard field goal at the 6:44 mark in the third quarter to extend the Red Demon lead to 17-6. Dodge City then added some trickeration, using a double hitch-and-pitch to get a big gain and set the Red Demons up with great field position. Jaiel Johnson, who was apart of that big play down the sideline finished off the drive with a 3-yard score to give Dodge City a 24-6 lead with 3 minutes to go in the third quarter.

The final Red Demon touchdown of the night came on a 25-yard pass to a wide open Matt Friess Jr. as he caught it in stride to give Dodge City the 31-6 lead.

Dodge City held the Liberal offense in check the second half, not allowing the Redskins to pick up a first down in the final half. Johnson had another 100-plus yard game for the Red Demons and Foster had a 100-plus yard passing game, as well.

The Red Demons will now host Junction City in the first round of the 6A state playoffs on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.
