Red Demons split with Hays High

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Dodge City High School basketball teams played host to the Hays High Indians on Friday night inside of the DCHS Fieldhouse. The Lady Demons picked up a 56-34 win, while the Red Demon boys fell in the nightcap, 69-48.


DODGE CITY GIRLS 56, HAYS HIGH 34

The Lady Demons improved their record to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in WAC play with their second straight victory this week. Dodge City struggled early on and found themselves down 7-2, but were able to use a 4-0 run to end the quarter to go up 14-11. The run would continue into the second quarter, as they’d build a 20-11 lead midway through the second frame. Hays responded with a 6-0 run to pull within three at 20-17, but Dodge City would take a 28-20 lead into the halftime break. 

Dodge City led 38-30 going into the final period of play. The Lady Demons would score the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, building a 50-30 lead before Hays would score their first fourth quarter points at the 3:14 mark, but that would be too little, too late as Dodge City would use that 15-0 run to their advantage cruising to their twelfth victory of the season. Dodge City shot 42% from the field, marking their fifth straight game that they’ve shot over 40% from the field and are 4-1 in that span.

HAYS HIGH BOYS 69, DODGE CITY 48

The Hays High Indians ended their three-game losing streak with a 21-point road win on Friday night at Dodge City. The Red Demons on the other hand, extended their losing streak to seven games. 

The two teams went back and forth in the first quarter, but it would be Hays taking a 13-11 lead into the second period. After Dodge City hit a three to start the second quarter and go up 14-13, Hays High responded with eight straight to go up seven, 21-14. Dodge City hit two three-pointers within a two minute span to pull within two, 25-23 with 53 seconds remaining in the half, but Hays ended the half on a 5-0 run to go up seven after one half.

Hays got the first points of the second half to extend their lead to nine, Dodge City would pull within six at 34-28 with 5:00 to go in the third quarter,  but that’s the closest they’d get the remainder of the game. Hays went on a 9-0 run at that point to go up 43-28 late in the quarter and would lead 48-36 after three quarters. The Indians continued to use their size to their advantage as they’d go up 55-36 with 7:00 to go. Hays High would dominate the remaining seven minutes to improve to 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.
