Red Demons Look For Improvement in Facing Young Southeast Squad
Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) Both Dodge City and Wichita Southeast look to shore up their defenses for week two of the high school football season tonight in the Red Demons home opener from Memorial Stadium. Dodge City’s defense is looking to raise their performance after allowing 470 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns during last week’s 48-41 loss to Wichita West. Coach Dave Foster says it is time to scrap the aggressive 10-1 front and take a step backward to take two steps forward.
Senior Gideon Wells is one of the guys looking to make the big play on defense. He ranked second on the team last week with 7 ½ tackles from the linebacker corps.
Wichita Southeast Head Coach Mike Shartz is back on familiar ground. Shartz was head coach at Dodge City from 2001-04 where he went 16-29. After two years as Southeast’s defensive coordinator, Shartz is the head coach after Chris Asmussen took the Athletics Director positon at the school.
Shartz is taking over a team that scored 61 points last year in a 1-8 season and lost last week 53-14 to Wichita Heights all while his defense allowed 482 rushing yards in the loss.
Pre-game coverage begins at 6:30, kickoff is at 7 on Z98 and westernkansasnews.com.
