Red Demons improve to 14-1; Garden falls short
It’s hard to imagine the season playing out any better for first-year Dodge City High School soccer Coach Saul Hernandez.
And it keeps getting better.
Mario Martinez scored the lone goal, and Dodge City’s defense pitched a shutout in a 1-0 victory over Kapaun Mt. Carmel on Tuesday night. ‘
“This was a good test for us going into regionals,” Hernandez said. “Our guys did a good job of not falling for their defensive trap.”
The Red Demons improved to 14-1 overall.
Hays 2, Garden City 1
The Indians scored two goals in the first half before the Buffaloes countered with Jose Depaz’s goal that cut the deficit in half.
That’s when mother nature took over.
With the wind shifting, Hays had the advantage, playing with it at their backs for the first 40 minutes. In the second half, lightning was spotted just after 5 p.m. and the match was delayed. It was finally called just before 6 p.m.
“We got off to a slow start,” Coach Josue Negron said. “We had a lack of communication on the back end.”
Garden City finishes the season 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the WAC. Regional pairings will be released in the next few days.
